Under-16 Division 1 League

Our U16 team were in action on Thursday evening last in the league semi-final against Scotstown which was played in Kingscourt. This was the proverbial game of two halves with Scotstown dominant in the first but a resurgent Magheracloone taking control in the second. The home side started promisingly but wayward shooting meant that they only had three points on the board after fifteen minutes through Luke Mc Kenna and a Paudie Mc Mahon brace. Scotstown had replied with a couple of points from play and two pointed frees to lead by a point with a fine save by Jack Kirk keeping us in contention. Scotstown were exerting a lot of pressure at this stage but some great defending by Connor Cassin and Fergal Goodman combined with some fine fielding by Niall Marron and Liam Óg Murray helped ease the pressure. In the 20th minute of the half Barry Kieran managed to shake off his marker and finish from a narrow angle to score the first goal of the game. From there to half time Scotstown were in control however, scoring an unanswered goal and two points to lead by 1-6 to 1-3 at the break.

It was a different Mitchells team that emerged for the second half however showing renewed vigour and intensity. Liam Óg Murray won the throw-up and parted to Paudie Mc Mahon who combined with two other team mates before sending a rasping shot to the net. Liam Óg and Paudie combined again a minute later to register a point and put Magheracloone into the lead. The Magheracloone half backs of Ronan Burns, Peter Finnegan and Killian Mc Nally were now getting to grips with their

opponents and a foul on Liam Óg Murray led to another pointed free from Paudie Mc Mahon. The decisive moment of the game came ten minutes into the second half when super-sub David Martin intercepted a clearance and calmly finished to the net. From there to the finish Magheracloone were in control but some very wayward shooting meant they only registered two further pointed frees. A great defensive display meant however that they held the opposition scoreless in the second half with the final score reading Magheracloone 3-7 Scotstown 1-6. Monaghan Harps provide the opposition in the final on Saturday 20th September in Castleblayney.

Under-14 Division 1 League

Our U14s suffered a heart breaking defeat on Saturday last in the division 1 league final against Aughnamullen. Aughnamullen went into this game overwhelming favourites but our boys had the belief that they could derail this unbeaten team. It was Aughnamullen who made a very confident start with early scores. Some heroic defending from Shane Burns, Jack Doogan, Daniel Mc Connon and Connor Mc Keown forced many miskicks and wides on the Aughnamullen forwards. Ryan Farrelly in goals produced many outstanding saves and kept a clean sheet throughout the match. Magheracloone controlled the third quarter with Liam Óg Murray & David Martin completely dominating in midfield, winning the ball, setting up our scores and taking some phenomenal scores themselves, we most definitely had the game in our grasp. That is until David Martin one of our best players on the day received a black card which left many spectators on both sides bewildered in what up to now was a hard hitting, energy sapping match. This was a massive blow for Magheracloone. Ryan Mc Nulty moved to midfield and we continued to test Aughnamullen to their limit. Dylan Mc Cahey tormented the Aughnamullen defence with his speed and ball control and took some crucial scores under a lot of pressure. In the final quarter with tiredness setting in some of our kicking

went astray. The mentors emptied the bench, all of whom done well in a last gasp effort to outdo the opposition. We were guilty of some misses as our younger players were forced to take their own frees while Aughnamullens free taker stepped up to score the Aughnamullen frees. In the closing minutes and no one sure of the exact score because of the wonky scoreboard every one of our players rallied valiantly but were unable to secure the final point for the draw and so Aughnamullen lifted the cup. These young lads can be very proud of what they have achieved over the last year and no doubt if they can stick together they will be back in the final next year and hopefully get the result they truly deserve.

Team: Ryan Farrelly, Jack Doogan, Connor Mc Keown, Daniel Mc Connon (Capt.), Shane Burns, Matthew Kieran, David Martin, Liam Óg Murray, Ciaran Mc Mahon, Ronan Mc Keown, Gary Marron, Dylan Mc Cahey, Ryan Mc Nulty, Francis Lambe, Lochlan Toner, Kyle Matthews & Joseph Kirk.

Mentors: Gerry Mc Keown Michael Mc Nulty Paul Jones & Padraic Kelly.
