U-10: The Monaghan Town Community Games Gaelic Football Under-10 mixed team won the Ulster title in dramatic fashion in Killygarry, Co Cavan last Saturday. First up was a game against Glenswilly from Donegal, where Monaghan dominated the early exchanges, helped by a brace of well-taken goals from Seán Callan and points by Fionán Ó Gallchóir, Seán and Cian Bradley. Glenswilly came back into the game before half-time but could only close the gap to 2-4 to 0-3 and Monaghan regained the upper hand after the restart, with Eoin O’Hanlon finding the net twice and Seán and Fionán again on target. The Donegal side got a late goal, but the final score was still 4-7 to 1-3 in Monaghan’s favour.

Team and scorers: Luke McManus; Patrick Dooley-Duffy, Jordan Crampton; Michael McMorrow, Senan Cudden; Eoin O’Hanlon (2-0), Seán Callan (2-3); Fionnán Ó Gallchóir (0-3), Cian Bradley (0-1); Josh Kelly, Oisín Reilly.

The decisive game was against Cavan’s Erne Valley, who had also had a good win in their opener. Luke McManus, who had played in goals in the first game, opened the scoring and goals quickly followed from Oisín Reilly and Josh Kelly. Erne Valley rallied to get within two points, but scores from Luke and Eoin O’Hanlon settled the Monaghan lads and Luke rattled in two goals to make it 4-4 to 1-2 at half-time. The Cavan team, who won the last couple of Ulster titles, gradually ate into their deficit throughout the second half, despite Eoin kicking a brace of points at the other end. A tiring Monaghan side fell behind in the dying minutes, but they found the energy to launch another attack which ended with Oisín firing home what proved to be the winning goal, making it 5-6 to 4-7 at the end of a thrilling game.

Team and scorers: Cian Bradley; Patrick Dooley-Duffy, Jordan Crampton; Michael McMorrow, Senan Cudden; Eoin O’Hanlon (0-4), Luke McManus (2-2); Fionán Ó Gallchóir, Seán Callan; Josh Kelly (1-0), Oisín Reilly (2-0).

The substitutes for both games were: Scarlett Herron, Shea Swift, Max Mallen, Dáire Conlon and Ross Finnegan. Well done to all the players and their management: Martin Sheridan, Finbarr Conlon, Mel McMorrow and Mary White. Monaghan Town now go on to the All-Ireland Community Games Finals in Athlone in August.

Golf Classic: We are staging a golf classic in Rossmore Golf Club this Friday, June 27. If you wish to take a team or tee, please contact Harry Dwyer (086 2400120), Fergus Coyle (086 8502015) or Séamus McManus (086 8167928). All support appreciated.

Street Collection: Our juvenile club’s annual street collection took place across the town last weekend. Sincere thanks on behalf of the club are due to everyone who volunteered and everyone who supported.

Seniors: Our senior footballers had a 0-18 to 0-10 win at home to Scotstown in last Sunday’s SFL star game. Points from Dónal Hahessy (two), Fearghal McMahon, Dean Fanning, Nicholas Scott and Shane Smyth got us off to a good start, but a late point from Dean was our only score of the second quarter; leaving it level at half-time: 0-7 apiece. Scotstown kicked the first three points of the second half, but Shane, Dónal and Fearghal started a run of 11 unanswered points for our lads, with Dean (three), Nicholas Treanor (two), Shane, Fearghal and substitute John Mulligan also on target.

Team and scorers: Ashley White; Niall Treanor, David Hughes, Kevin Loughran; Nicholas Scott (0-1), Aodhán Óg McAnespie, Conor Devlin; Peter Coyle, Stephen Driver (Capt.); Liam Hahessy, Shane Smyth (0-3), Dónal Hahessy (0-3, 1f); Fearghal McMahon (0-3), Nicholas Treanor (0-2), Dean Fanning (0-5).

Subs: John Mulligan (0-1) for Devlin (inj., 33 mins), Michael Galligan for Loughran (inj., 35).

Draw: We are currently running a draw for a pair of tickets to Garth Brooks at Croke Park. Tickets cost just €2 each or €5 for a book of three and anyone who sells 20 books will be entered into a separate draw for an All-Ireland final ticket. Books of tickets are available from Jimmy Croarkin, who can be contacted at 087 1249635.

Reserves: Our O’Duffy Cup team lost by 4-9 to 1-8 at home to Truagh last Wednesday evening. An Ashley White free gave us an early lead, but Truagh replied with 1-2 in a row. Points from play by Dean Fanning, Liam Hahessy and Michael Galligan kept us in touch, but we missed a number of chances and were 1-3 to 0-4 down at half-time. Points by Dean and Ashley brought us level after the restart and although Truagh hit a second goal, scores from Liam and Dean kept us in the hunt going into the final quarter. The visitors pulled away with another couple of majors, however, meaning that a penalty converted by Dean was little consolation.

Team and scorers: Ryan Shields; Niall Treanor, Aodhán Óg McAnespie, John Mulligan; Conor Forde, Conor Devlin, Paul Smyth; Peter Coyle (Capt.), Ashley White (0-2, 1f); Éimhín Morahan, Michael Galligan (0-1), Niall Greenan; Liam Hahessy (0-2), Conor McCaughey, Dean Fanning (1-3, 1-0 pen, 0-1f).

Subs: Ahmed Gamal for Devlin (inj., 26 mins), Paul Byrne for Morahan (51), Jason McHugh for McCaughey (54).

Well done to Mustafa, who made his Ulster MFC debut in the win over Tyrone last Saturday and to Yvonne Connell and Muireann and Eimear O’Rourke and the Monaghan senior ladies, who beat Cavan.

Well done: To everyone involved in Special Olympics Ireland in Limerick.

Hurling: The Hurling Club hosted part of Féile na nGael 2014 at Gavan Duffy Park last weekend. First up was a very tough encounter against Bray Emmets on Friday, when our lads were without a few key players and struggled to match the skillful play of our guest club, who went on to win the Division Five title. With a couple of players returning on Saturday, the Harps were more competitive and they led Éire Óg (Kildare) at half-time before eventually losing out. The lads were also defeated by Cootehill, but they got a first win in the shield quarter-final against East Cavan Gaels, which qualified them for a semi-final in Garvaghey, Co Tyrone on Sunday. Lámh Dhearg from Antrim proved too strong in that game, but our lads stayed on to support Bray. Congratulations to Bray on their win.

The Harps panel was: Aaron Treanor, Jamie Hamill, Killian Treanor, Lochlainn Power, John Lowry, Kian O’Leary, Tristan Moyna, Patrick McCarron, Shane McCabe, Sebastian Ostrowski, Kasper Ostrowski, Che Treanor, Stephen Ward, Paul Maguire, Evan Meehan, Brendan Óg Ó Dufaigh, Conor McCrystal, Colin Peppard, Luke Coyle, Ruairc Healy, Vlad Khokha, Aidan McKenna, Niall McKenna and Seán Conway.

Well done to Jim Dalton, Michael O’Donoghue, Thomas McCabe and everyone involved in a successful weekend. Thanks also to all the parents who brought in a huge amount of food for our guests, the musicians in the clubhouse on Friday night, everyone who helped out with the barbeque on Saturday and the young lads who looked after the shop over the weekend.

Our Under-16s started the league with a comprehensive win over Truagh on Monday and they are due to travel to Inniskeen next week. The Under-12 game against Cootehill was called off, with an away game against Truagh next up on Monday.

Ladies: Our U-12s played Killanny on Saturday and our U-16s played Truagh on Monday. No results were known at time of going to print

Congratulations to club senior players Yvonne Connell, Muireann O’Rourke and Eimear O’Rourke, who were part of the county team’s victory over Cavan in the Ulster senior semi-final last Saturday. Congratulations especially to Eimear who made her senior championship debut. Monaghan now play Armagh in the Ulster Final on Sunday, July 6 in Healy Park, Omagh
