Clones Notes

Division 2 Final: This Sunday all roads lead to CrokePark for the Division 2 decider against Donegal, tickets are available from our U12 and U14 sponsor SuperValu.  Tickets are €20 now or €25 on the day, with Juveniles €5.  Best of luck to Fintan and the county team, Bring it home boys.

Congratulations to James Mealiff on scoring three goals for the CountyMinors against Antrim last Saturday.  They take on Cavan now in the Ulster Minor Football league final.  That game is in Clones this Saturday with a 12pm throw-in.  Best of luck to James and the team in the final, the first piece of silverware of the year will be on its way with a bit of luck.

Congratulations also to three Clones natives who completed the London Martahon, with all three running excellent times.  Ciaran Graham led the trio home on 2:59.27, Niamh Maguire crossed the line in 4:18.59, shortly followed by Raymond Monaghan in 4:20.16.  Last Sunday another Clones GFC man Darren Cassidy completed the Brighton Marathon.  Well done to you all.

Congratulations to former Clones and Monaghan GAA legend Jonathan Douglas, who playing for a different code with Brentford in the UK helped his team secure promotion for next season.  A great supporter of the club over the years, he deserves all the accolades and success coming his way.

County Success: Comhghairdeas mór to Ella Daly and Conor Reilly from LargyCollege who were awarded scholarships to Coláiste Bhride Rann na Feirste this summer.  They beat off stiff opposition as there were only ten scholarships available.  A right of passage for any young teen, taitneamh a bhaint as é! enjoy it.

Seniors:  Clones welcomed Tyholland to St Tiarnach’s Park on Wednesday evening last. Following on from a good home win against Cremartin at the weekend, Clones were bidding to get another two league points on the board. It was the home side who started brighter and raced into a 6 point lead midway through the first half. Tyholland rallied and fired two goals before the break to lead by 2 points at half time.The second half was an exciting affair. Both teams contributed to a great game and there were some super scores from both sides but the Clones lads dug deep to turn the deficit around and emerge victorious on a scoreline of Clones 0-18 Tyholland 2-9.Next game is away to Carrickmacross on Friday 2nd May.  Team and Scorers:  Colin McCaughey ,Paul Connolly, Paul Shiels, Ben Daly, Colm Connolly(0-1) Michéal Treanor, Ethan Audley, Fintan Kelly(0-2) John McDonald, Cian O’Connor(0-1), Darragh Holland (0-2),David Freeman(0-7), Emmet McEntee (0-1),Adrian Alford(0-2)Sarto Quigley(0-2). James MacElwain, Declan McQuaid Packie McCarville.  Training continues every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday.  There continues to be strong numbers at training and the competition for places on the team is fierce.

U21’s:  The club U21’s continue to train with the seniors, there are no competitive games until July, challenge games are being organised currently by their mentor Daragh Holland.

Minors’:  training continues as normal with a report on our game against Emyvale on Tuesday next week.

U-16s had a good win away to local rivals Killeevan last Thursday on a scoreline of 3-10 to 7-11. We started brightly with goals from Oliver Clerkin and Daniel McAloon and points from Evan Mulvanny, Oliver Clerkin, Daniel McAloon and Fabian Beggan. Killeevan to their credit battled hard and played some good football and sides went in at half time, Killeevan 1-3 Clones 2-7. In what was a closely contested 2nd half the whole way through and with only a point in it with 10 minutes remaining it was a flurry of goals from Daniel McAloon, Sean McElwain and Declan McKiernan Jr in the last 10 minutes which saw the boys over the line! U16 B team suffered a defeat on Thursday last against a strong Cremartin team. Clones battled hard led by captain David Mc Cabe, they had a few chances but luck just wasn’t on their side and they fought on to the final whistle.

Under14’s  The Under 14 Team hosted Tyholland in St Tiarnachs Park on Saturday in the League.In what was a keenly contested match a goal by Tyholland with the final kick of the ball handed the visitors a win by the narrowest of margins of 1 point. Final score 5.5 to 3.12.Team; Evan Quigley, Ben Slowey, Niall McKenna, Simon O’Connell, Conor Smith (0:01), Conal Smith, Jamie Scott (1:00), Rian Kearns (2:00), Alan Curly (0:01), Maitiu Monaghan (0:02), Jamie McQuillan (2:01), Reece Kearns for Niall McKenna, Shane Potter for Jamie Scott, Conor McKenna, Harry Cleary, Regan Graham, Eanna Kilpatrick.  Thanks to all the parents and supporters who attend the games. Training continues every Tuesday in Killeevan.

Under12’s Big game this Friday is against Scotstown in Scotshouse throw in 7:15, support our young players.

Under 8’s &Under 10’s training is again on Wednesday evening.  Have you seen the posters for the Easter camp? A note to all players and parents that mouth-guards are now compulsory for all matches and training, they’re as important as the boots so na dearna sibh dearmad (Don’t Forget).

We had great numbers out for U8/10 training last week.  We also had U10s in a blitz on Saturday in Clontibret and we played three great games with some lovely footballers coming along. U8s Blitz this week also in Clontibret.
