Round-up (March 1-2)

March 5th, 2014

Monaghan fell to their first defeat of this year’s Allianz National Football League Division Two away to Donegal on Sunday. Goals by Odhrán Mac Niallias and Colm McFadden proved too much for Monaghan in front of a near-full-house in Letterkenny (see report).

Monaghan’s ladies continued their excellent start to 2014 with a third National Football League One win away to Tyrone on Sunday. Cathriona McConnell netted a brace and Caoimhe Mohan and Niamh Kindlon also hit goals as Monaghan powered their way to a comprehensive victory.

Our Lady’s, Castleblayney won the Danske Bank Ulster Colleges O’Doherty Cup Final in Inniskeen on Thursday evening. Michael Bannigan scored the Blayney school’s only goal as they dominated the first half with the wind at their backs; Man-of-the-Match Barry McGinn adding three points to help make the half-time score 1-7 to 0-1. Our Lady’s saw McGinn black-carded late on and Aaron Kelly saw red for a second booking, but with Barry McEneaney making a couple of good saves, there was no way back for St. Louis, Kilkeel.

The Our Lady’s team was: Barry McEneaney; Eoin McKearney, Mark Kelly, Darragh McKenna; Kevin McVicar (0-1), Barry Kerr (0-1), Daniel Friskey; John Beattie (0-1), Conor Marray; Ryan Murphy, Barry McGinn (0-3), Jamie Walshe (0-2); Michael Bannigan (1-2), Ryan McVicar, Aaron Kelly.

Subs: Ronan McNamara for R McVicar, Aidan McElroy for Murphy, Frank Connolly for McGinn (black card).

There was no luck for Largy College in the Ulster Vocational Schools Senior Markey Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, as the Clones side lost out to Coláiste na Carraige from Donegal.

Doohamlet returned to winning ways in the Quinn’s Corner Ulster Club Senior Football League Group A away to St. John’s, Belfast on Sunday, while Inniskeen were comfortable winners over Newry Shamrocks in the Ulster Club Intermediate Football League Group B on Monday evening.

Domestic club action for 2014 began with games in the Platinum Tanks Reserve Football League Division Three over the weekend. Last year’s double runners-up Blackhill began with a comfortable win over Emyvale, while Clontibret and newly-relegated Truagh ran up big scores against Killanny and Currin respectively and Toome got the better of last year’s championship winners Monaghan Harps.
