Centenary Year: Emyvale GAA Club celebrates the centenary of its formation this year so we have decided to publish some snippets of the history of the club over the coming weeks. Emyvale is very fortunate to have club member & historian Seamus Mc Cluskey who has written “Emyvale GAA Club, A History” which covers the period from the founding of the club up until the 1980’s. Since then he has kept scrap books of all the newspapers cuttings for each year & these are stored in the clubhouse in Tully so the history of the club will always be recorded. There were no records in those early years but Seamus states in his book that it was Master Flood of Innisdevlin who taught in Edenmore National School that got the young lads of the district together in a field near the Blue Bridge in 1914 and here the  Emyvale GAA club was born. They played teams from Bragan, Tydavnet, Middletown & Clogher. Some of those who played on that early team were: Paddy Mohan, Derilla; Johnnie Mc Carron, Knockronaghan;  John (Paddy Brian) Treanor, Golan;  James Mc Quillan, Tonneyfinnegan; Frank Treanor (Phil Sheamuis); Owenie (Briney) Treanor; James Mc Kenna, Killacorn; Jemmie (Pheadar) Mc Kenna, Tamlet; Mc Carrons & Mc Kennas.  Paddy Mohan, Derilla recalled some great memories of this team & could remember playing games at Innishdevlin, Derrykinnighbeg, Drumberrin, Tydavnet & Edenmore.  Indeed Paddy was the first man from the parish to play for the Monaghan County Senior Team when he came on as a sub in 1915 & scored 1 – 5 to help Monaghan to victory against Leitrim & following this brilliant performance he was referred to “The Skipper”.  The earliest official record is a minute in the report of the Ulster Council meeting in 1918 where Emyvale put in a request for the use of two players, Francis Treanor & Peter Gorman from Aghaloo to play for Emyvale & this request was granted.

Ideas: As mentioned already the club will be celebrating its 100th year in existence in 2014. We hope to mark the occasion in a special way. We would welcome any ideas on what would be appropriate for the occasion. A small sub – committee will be set up shortly to oversee the project.

Notes: If you want to have something included in the notes in 2014 can you please contact 087-4103569 or email pro.emyvale.monaghan@gaa.ie
