Doohamlet notes

Senior Championship:   Doohamlet 1-10  Carrick 0-07

During our short history Doohamlet have had some memorable games and fantastic achievements but few will compare to this game on Sunday last. Playing in a Senior Championship game against a formidable opponent without our injured midfield general Ciaran McManus and the influential Ollie Hughes Doohamlet were reduced to 13 players after two of our main men Darren Connolly and Colin Walshe were dismissed after 19 minutes.

Faced with this adversity Doohamlet hung on for the remainder of the half and went in at the break 1 point down 0-05 to 0-04.

Rather than feel sorry for ourselves the players regrouped and management set a plan that we would concede possession up front, turnover in defence and attack at speed on the break. The plan worked to perfection. We only conceded three points in the entire second half and soaked up whatever pressure Carrick could offer. Jason McElroy, Kevin McArdle, Martin Hughes, Niall Connolly, Gabie Casey, Mark Murphy heroes all and when Ted Duffy crashed to the net and added another point midway through the half Doohamlet had the lead they would not relinquish. Further points from our minors Barry McBennett and Barry McGinn increased our lead and Doohamlet ran out 6 point winners and Carrick shell-shocked.

James Casey in goal was immense throughout and made a crucial save in the first half and when Shane McManus was introduced at half time he showed all his experience with his positional play and use of possession.

Our supporters must be commended. They got behind the team and remained after the game to applaud their heroes off the field in what surely was our finest hour. (See match Report)

Next up for Doohamlet in the Championship we take on Magheracloone for a place in the quarter finals on Sunday next in Clontibret at 1.30pm. With momentum with us now who knows what might happen.

U-16 Champions: Our U-16 team set the tone on Saturday last when they defeated Currin/Aghabog in the League Final.

Whatever is in the Doohamlet DNA this group of boys refused to accept defeat. After conceding three goals midway through the second half Doohamlet found themselves eight points down with five minutes remaining and the Currin/Aghabog ribbons were being tied on the trophy. Goals from Conor Marray and Jamie Walshe turned this game on its head and when Hugh McGinn curled over the equalising point momentum had swung in Doohamlets favour. In a pulsating last few minutes Conor Marray fired over the winning point and as the seconds past Doohamlet supporters yearned for the final whistle as both sides fought to the finish. After six agonising minutes of injury time the final whistle sounded and Doohamlet were U16 Champions as supporters thronged onto the pitch to congratulate their heroes.  Magnificent performances from Conor Marray who scored 3-10 Jamie Walshe who battled throughout in the middle of the park and Mark Connolly in defence but no one could begrudge Man of the Match M.J.O’Connor in the Doohamlet goal. On numerous occasions MJ was our last line of defence and time and again came to our rescue against a rampant Currin/Aghabog forward line.

Congratulations to this group of players who finished top of their league and are worthy champions. Team captain Mark Connolly accepted the cup from his fellow clubman Colin Walshe and in his speech thanked mentors Jim Kelly Eamonn Hughes Paul Markey Pat Leer and Kevin McKenna. Credit to everyone involved in this success.
