Castleblayney Faughs

May 14th, 2013

Lotto – This week’s draw results will follow in next week’s notes. The numbers drawn in last weeks lotto, 7th May 2013 which took place in The Spinning Wheel were 10, 17, 20 and 22. The four lucky dip winners of €50 each were Liam O’Connor, Drumillard, Edmond Duffy, Castleblayney, Lily Cannon, Crossmaglen and Phyllis Murphy, Drumleer Sth. There was no Jackpot winner last  week but congratulations to Gertie O’Reilly from Annalitten who won the monthly prise of €200. Next week’s draw will take place in the Horsemans Inn. Good luck to everyone and many thanks for your continued support.

Seniors – A poor week for the seniors with no points gained from two league matches. On Wednesday last we travelled to Latton and lost 2-06 to 0-10. It was a game we really should have won; the old adage goes that goals win games and this was certainly true as we failed with four decent goal chances but Latton took both of theirs including a late winner after Blayney had led for most of the hour. On Sunday we faced Scotstown and in a calamitous opening 25mins lost 4 players to injury leaving us with a mountain to climb and Scotstown ran out comfortable winners. The next senior game is Wednesday 22nd at home to Carrickmacross.

Junior C’s – The C’s league chances all but evaporated on Friday last when they lost to Rockcorry by four points 2-12 to 1-11. It was a real Jekyll and Hyde performance with a good start and finish to the game by Blayney undermined by poor periods either side of half time. The game was marred by an injury to Blayneys Niall McCann after an accidental clash, thanks to Rockcorry for their assistance in dealing with it.

Who wants to be a Thousandaire – On Saturday 8th June 2013, Castleblayney Faughs will host the hugely popular “Who wants to be a Thousandaire” to The Glencarn Hotel. This show has attracted large audiences all over Ireland over the past seven years. Contestants will be drawn from ticket sales and each contestant will have the opportunity to play for €1000. The show is fully computerised with 50/50,” Ask the Audience” and a brilliant video linked “Phone a Friend”. If chosen to participate, you have the option of taking to the stage to play or nominating someone to represent you on the night. This is an excellent opportunity to put your general knowledge to the test while enjoying the craic and banter of what promises to be a brilliant night. Much more information to follow in the coming weeks.

Speedy recovery – Best wishes for quick recoveries to Cormac Brady, Marc McHugh, Marty McElroy, Paddy Finnegan and Niall McCann who all took knocks over the weekend.

Minors – The minor team wrapped up the first half of the minor league with a comfortable win against Killeavin last Tuesday night. We now have a break until the 9th of July.  We have two tough league games directly after the break against Inniskeen and St Tiarnachs before we play Emerald Sarsfields in the Championship on July 30th. Lads don’t let your hard work on the training field drift away, remember to get some individual training in over the next few weeks.

Under 16 Boys – The Boys travelled to Doohamlet last Friday were they played against a strong Doohamlet team. Half time saw the honours equal but a strong opening to the second half saw Doohamlet open up a big lead. The Blayney lads battled back in the final quarter but as with the previous week they left it to late as they went down by 5 points. Best on the night was Eithan McCann, Brandon Rice and Mark Connors. Tonight (Thursday) the lads have their first home game of the season against Rockcorry at 7.30pm. Can we ask that if you are about, come out and support the boys, they have been turning up in good numbers and training hard so hopefully that elusive first win isn’t far away.

Under 14 Girls – The girls played Sean McDermott’s on Monday night and came back down to earth after last week win against Aghabog. They were defeated by a more experienced Sean’s team which had a number of county players but it’s all a learning curve for these young ladies, who are really enjoying the experience of playing with the Club. Best on the night for the young Ladies were Lisa Rooney at full back, Aine Clarke at wing back and upfront Lauren Hughes. Training continues on Saturday at 12pm while the girls next match is against Killeavin next Monday evening in St Marys Park at 6.45pm

Under 14 Boys– These lads have been unlucky so far, with two opening defeats to date. Both matches have seen this team perform some great passages of play, with ball retention and tight marking being two of their key attributes. This Saturday sees the boys take on Fergal O’Hanlons in St Marys Park at 12pm. Please come out and support as this is a great young team who could do with your support.

Under 12 Boys – Both our Under 12 teams competed in the County Under 12’s Finals Day on a wet and blustery afternoon, last Saturday in Cloghan. First up were the Development team who played Corduff, this young team showed great character and some great ability as they fought for every ball against a bigger Corduff team, the lads went down by a couple of scores but it must be noted that this team are all eligible to play again in 2014. The senior team were next up to play Traugh in their final.  This team have been working hard on the training pitch since the start of the year and this work shone through a they played some excellent traditional Faughs style football with every player extremely comfortable on the ball. Not even a collapsing set of Goalposts could put these young lads off as they recorded a good victory over Traugh. Next up for both teams is the start of the Under 12 league competition which starts on Saturday May 25th.League format will be decided next week

Under 10 Boys – Training is also on this evening (Thursday) at 7 pm as the boys get ready to play in their Go Games Series next Saturday 18th of May in Toome. The opposition on the day will be Oram, Toome ,Ballybay and Innsikeen.  This will prove to be a good test for all the team. Travel times will be communicated during the week.

Under 8 and Under 10 Girls – Training takes place on Monday night in Our Ladys Secondary School Astro turf ,we hope to have a challenge game organised over the next couple of weeks in advance of the Go Games Blitz on June 15th.

Under 8 Boys – Training continues tonight (Thursday) at 6pm, with a match on Saturday in St Marys Park at 10.30am against our old friends Crossmaghlen. Can we ask all parents that the boys are all in the field at 10.15am, parents can you also show your support again and turn out in numbers for the match. Please note that the next set of Go Games will be in Toome on May 25th at 10am and will include Toome ,Oram, Ballybay and Inniskeen.

Under 6 – Training in Rath Na Og each week from 6pm to 7pm .All newcomers more than welcome .

Well done – This week we have seen two great performances by one of our young club members, Pierce O’Callaghan put in a good weeks work when he firstly played on the minor team on Tuesday night and scored 1 -2, before making an appearance as a Referee in the Under 12 County Finals Day were he did a great job in all his matches. Well done Pierce it’s not easy to become a referee at such an early age and also play at the same time.
