Scotstown

February 27th, 2013

Reserves: After a long winter, the club football season finally resumes this Sunday when our Reserves take on Monaghan Harps away at Rooskey in RFL Division 1A at 12 noon. The Reserve competition is slightly different this season, in that there are six teams in RFL Division 1A who will play each other home and away (ten games in total). The top two teams in the division will then play each other in the Final. Scotstown Reserves had a win in a challenge game against Ballyhegan of Armagh in Scotstown last Sunday.

Presentation Night: There will be a presentation night this Saturday night at 9pm in the Social Club at the Complex. Medals will be presented to the double-winning C team, the 2012 Minor League winners, and the successful Ladies Under 16 squad. Food served at 9:30pm sharp.

NFL: Monaghan take on Sligo in a Division Three fixture on Sunday in Clones, throwing in at 2pm.

Railway Cup: Darren Hughes captained Ulster to victory against Leinster on Sunday last in the M Donnelly Inter-Provinicial Football Final at Croke Park. Kieran Hughes also played a part as substitute in what was Ulster’s third Railway Cup win in a row. Congratulations to both players.

Scotstown GAA draw: The club have begun development at the Kilmore East training grounds, with the construction of a track around the perimeter now under way. An all-weather playing surface, redevelopment of dressing rooms, upgrading of floodlights and perimeter fencing are also planned. A major fundraising draw will be the main source of the income required to match the funding already secured through grants. The first prize in the draw is a top of the range Seat Ibiza car, with the second prize a luxury cruise. There are cash prizes of €1000, and two of €500 and the sixth prize in the draw will be for a pair of 2013 All-Ireland Football Final tickets. Tickets for the draw are available from committee members priced at €20 each, or three for €50. The draw itself will take place in August.

Tydavnet Juvenile Handball Finals: The semi-finals and finals of both Groups 1 and 2 took place on Tuesday night. Ronan King defeated Darragh McCague after a great match in the first semi-final 15-13, 8-15, 15-11. In the second semi-final Killian Sherry defeated Liam McCague in another very good match that ended 15-13, 15-8. Killian’s Z serve was proving a real match winner, and in the final against Ronan it was this serve that caused most damage and after a great final Killian emerged victorious 15-13, 15-12 to lift the Jack Murphy Shield. In Group 2, the first semi-final was between Conor Mohan and Fintan Hackett. Conor won a good game 15-7, 15-12. The second semi-final was another good match between James McCague and James Curley. It was James’ ace serves into the left and right corners that won him the match. The final between Conor and James was probably the best juvenile final we have witnessed in years. These two players reached the county juvenile championship finals earlier at U15 and U16 and this match proved why. Both players have most of the shots, with good defensive shots and lethal kills and returns. On the night Conor held out for a great win and became the second player to lift the Evelyn Mohan Perpetual Shield, but this game could have gone either way. Well done to all the juveniles who took part in the leagues and it must be said that the standard was the best ever. Even though the games were intense and the disappointment of losing was obvious, all the players showed excellent sportsmanship throughout and at the end of the day there were no losers. The Group 3 semi-finals and final shall take place soon.

Ladies Training: Senior, Minor and Under 16 training continues every Tuesday at 7pm in the Complex. Full attendance is expected.

Presentation Night: The successful 2012 Ladies Under 16 panel will be presented with their medals this Saturday night in the Social Club at the Complex at 9pm. Food served at 9:30pm sharp.

Ladies U12 Presentations: The Under 12’s will be presented with their medals next Sunday, March 3rd at 7pm in the Complex – we urge all players and parents to attend.

Condolences: Sympathy is extended to the friends and family of the recently deceased who include Pat Colton, Ardnasalem; Alice Todd, Ballyoisin; Lucy McElmeel, Rosefield.
