Seniors – will play their last game in the league this Saturday when we are home to Emyvale. Throw in time 5pm.

Under 16 – Eire Óg under16 team won the championship on Thursday night in Emyvale. With the Division 4 league title under their belt from three weeks ago the lads had a big task to pull off an historic double. After defeating Killeevan in the league final they had to travel to Killeevan in the semi final and after another titanic battle which could have went either way our lads emerged victorious. Booking a final berth against Corduff narrowly who overcame Aghabog/Rockcorry in their semi-final. Corduff and Eire Óg drew twice in the league during the year, with Eire Óg defeating them in the league semi-final in Smithboro. The scene was set for a very close entertaining championship final. With a 7 pm throw on a dark September evening, Emyvale had the flood lights on from the start but they did not take effect to the second half.

Eire Óg played with the wind in the first half and started well but was struggling to get scores. After a half a dozen attacks James Leonard opened the scoring with a 30 yard shot on the fifth minute. Joe Gavin doubled the lead with an excellent point. In the tenth minute Cathal Sweeney broke through on goal and shot just wide of the post from close range. Corduff struck back immediately with a point and then in the twelfth minute took the lead after an infringement in the large rectangle resulting in a penalty which was converted. Two minutes later Eire Óg went on the attack with Michael Tierney who played a low ball on the ground towards Conor Leonard, who drew on it first time and directed it past the Corduff goalkeeper into the corner of the net. Corduff pull another point back in the 15th minute which was cancelled out by a point from a dead ball on the 13 mtr line by Dermot Gleeson. The same player again from a long range free off the ground, this time on the 45mtr line, extended the Eire Óg lead. Over the next five minutes Corduff hit a purple patch scoring two excellent points and then got their second goal to give them a three point lead. Conor Leonard knocked over a point in the 24th minute followed by an excellent point from Michael Tierney. On the stroke of half time Dermott Gleeson raised the white flag with a long range point. Score at the short whistle was Eire Óg 1-7  Corduff  2-4.

Corduff started the second half much better with the wind in their backs. They notched up two points in the 3rd and 5th minute. Dermot Gleeson narrowed the gap with a pointed freeing the 6th minute. Two minutes later Mathew McElvaney started a move, got the return from Kevin Sheridan, soloed up the end line and took a shot for goal which was parried by the goalkeeper. Goal poacher Conor Leonard was on hand for an easy tap into the Corduff net. From the kick out Calvin Carisle increased the Eire Óg lead to three points with an excellent over the shoulder point. It was end to end stuff for the next five minutes without any scores. Then Corduff on two attacks scored a point and then bust through the Eire Óg defence rattling the net. With twelve minutes remaining Francis McMahon was introduced for the Blue and yellow and on his first touch took a shot which narrowly hit the net. In the 19th minute Francis got on the score sheet with a point to bring the sides level once again. The scene was set for a terrific finish with either side capable of taking the spoils. A large crowd from both clubs was in attendance with both sides being spurred on with every kick of the ball.

Eire Óg took the initiative in the 21st and 22nd minute with points from Calvin Carisle and Mathew McElvaney but Corduff were not finished and levelled the game once again with two points in a row. Eire Og introduced Shane Monaghan for the last five minutes. The game was in the melting pot. With minutes remaining a great move by Eire Óg seen some quick pin point passes putting super sub Francis McMahon in front of goal 10 yards out. Francis calmly stuck the ball in the onion bag with 2 minutes remaining. Corduff  were not finished yet and battled hard with another three attacks but the Eire Óg defence stood resolute conceding no more scores. The final score was Eire Óg 3-12 to Corduff  3-9. This was a wonderful game, good hard football, played in very good spirit. This division 4 competition is 11-a-side, full length of the pitch so there is a lot of free space. Both teams had excellent athletes on their team to keep this hectic pace for a full hour. Credit to both teams for an excellent game of football.

Dermot Gleeson and James Leonard, joint captains received the cup from Patrica Smith Monaghan County Board. Eire Óg team management of Mickey Tierney, Mark McBride, Eamon Brady, Donal Tierney and Jim O Rourke were thanked by James Leonard for their hard work and dedication throughout the year in his speech. He also gave a special thanks to Margaret Tierney who did the first aid for the team all season. This under 16 team will go down in Eire Óg history for achieving a dramatic double. Well done to this great bunch of lads the club is very proud of you.
