U14FLD42012. Latton 4-19, Toome 5-21. A stellar performance from two of the most naturally talented and brightest young stars in the Toome GAA underage firmament, namely, James Wilson and John Gorman, was the highlight of the u14 football league encounter in O’Rahilly Park on Saturday 25th August. Both players have been consistently impressive throughout the year, but on Saturday last, they raised their performances to a different level. James’s outfield play was exceptional, scoring a record 4-8, – probably breaking his own record in the process. John’s reading of the game was, as always, simply brilliant; his positioning was uncanny, and he possesses an extremely safe pair of hands. These attributes were all required before the game was over. James opened his account after 3 minutes with a point from distance – which was immediately cancelled out by the home team. In the 5th minute, James blasted in his first goal, followed by a similar score from Latton, who then tagged on a further brace of points. Kevin McCooey ended a skilful run with a well taken score. The O’Rahillys were now enjoying a dominant spell and lofted over further two shots, before James struck again with a smashing goal, following up with an angled point from distance. First period ended in a draw –Toome 2-3, Latton 1-6. The home team was quick off the mark with a well taken point before Charlie McDonnell opened his account with a similar score. The Toome backs were in control; Frank Connolly and Bartek were driving forward; James and Keane O’Reilly were causing problems for the Blues. Keane and Charlie converted two opportunities, and James added a further four points, (one from 40 metres). Latton added on two scores, leaving Toome ahead by 0-7 to 0-3 for the period, and a half time score of 2-10 to 1-9, in favour of the visitors. Keane and Kevin kept the score board ticking over, and Charlie, (who was frustrated on a number of occasions by diving blocks from the Latton ‘keeper) eventually raised the green flag. Frank’s point was cancelled out by the Blues, who, as a result of some tactical switches, began exerting greater pressure in the middle third of the field, resulting in the addition of 1-3, without reply. Points from Frank and Charlie and 1-1 from James steadied the Red’s ship, while the Blues finished off with 2 minor scores. Toome came out on top after this period by 2-6 to 2-4, or by 4-16 to 3-13 at the three quarter stage. Toome emptied the bench for the final period. Charlie (0-3) and James (1-2) finished off the Toome scores with Latton adding on a further 1-6This was the last game in the League for Toome, who now go forward to final, to compete for the League and Championship double. Gabby performed well –he received excellent cover from Mark, whose link play was top class, and the exceptional John Gorman. Kevin Tibby and Stephen Blessing were under siege for periods but came through with honours. Frank and Bartek acquitted themselves particularly well, especially in the last quarter, when the Blues were coming through in waves. James, who covered an incredible amount of ground, was continually orchestrating, covering back, setting up and taking super scores. Keane O’Reilly and Kevin McCooey were always probing to superb effect. Target man, Charlie McDonnell performed his role with enormous energy and his 1-7 contribution was terrific. The supersubs brought an immense energy to the proceedings and undoubtedly, will be ready to claim their places in the not too distant future. Panel –Gabby, Mark Byrne, John Gorman, Kevin Tibby, Stephen Blessing, Frank Connolly, (0-2), Bartek, Keane O’Reilly, (0-3), James Wilson, (4-8), Kevin McCooey, (0-1), Charlie McDonnell, (1-7). Subs. Cian McEneaney, Igor, Joseph Harte, Patrick McMahon, Andrew Connolly, Peter McGinn, Sam Dykes.
