SFC: The senior footballers exited the championship with a 0-11 to 1-5 defeat against Latton in Inniskeen last Saturday evening. Despite having a man sent off early on, Latton hit four of the game’s first six points, with our only scores of the first 20 minutes coming from David Hughes and a Donal Hahessy free. We took the lead for the first time on 23 minutes when Nicholas Treanor tucked a low shot into the net at the end of a good move. Donal added a point from a free, although Latton got the last point of the half to leave just a point between the teams at half-time: 1-3 to 0-5. The second half was disappointing to say the least, as our only scores came from Paddy Connolly and a free by Donal. We now turn our attentions to the last four games of the league, where we need to pick up points to secure our senior status. We wish Gareth Treanor and Liam Hahessy speedy recoveries from their recent injuries.

Team and scorers: Mark Hughes; Niall Hahessy, Stephen Driver, Paul Rushe; Gareth Treanor, Conor Galligan, Aodhán Óg McAnespie; Peter Coyle, Neil McAdam (Capt.); Paddy Connolly (0-1), Nicholas Treanor (1-0), Nicholas Scott; Donal Hahessy (0-3f), Shane Smyth, David Hughes (0-1).

Subs: Emmett McArdle for G Treanor (inj., 29 mins), David Loughran for Rushe (52).

The league game against Castleblayney has been postponed due to Blayney’s championship match, meaning our next game is now scheduled for September 9 at home to Magheracloone.

Minors: The minor footballers lost narrowly away to Scotstown in the league semi-finals on Monday. The teams swapped points three times in the first 20 minutes, with Fearghal McMahon (two) and Kevin Loughran getting our scores and although Scotstown threatened to pull away after scoring a goal and a point, a couple of good scores by Shane Loughran kept our lads in touch and Jason McHugh found the net to help us draw level at 1-5 each by half-time. After getting off to a slow start in the second half, a point by Evan Doherty, a brace by Fearghal and another nice score by Shane brought our lads level at 1-9 apiece, but Scotstown hit the last two points to edge through to the final.

Team and scorers: Ryan Shields; Niall Treanor, Mustafa Gamal, Pauric Murphy; Brendan McQuaid, Michael Galligan, Benin Devlin; Kevin Loughran (0-1), Shane Maguire (Capt.); Fearghal McMahon (0-4, 3f), Turlough Clerkin, Carl Foentjies; Jason McHugh (1-0), Evan Doherty (0-1), Shane Loughran (0-3).

Subs: Conor Forde for Clerkin (H-T), Francis Lynch for McQuaid (inj., 60 mins).

The minors will also play away to Scotstown in the championship semi-finals, despite last Tuesday’s defeat at home to Castleblayney. A very sluggish start allowed Blayney to take charge with an early flurry of scores, before Paul Byrne got our first score with a goal. Michael Galligan and Fearghal McMahon added points, but our lads still trailed by 2-5 to 1-2 at half-time. Fearghal scored a free to get us up and running in the second half and Evan Doherty added a goal, but we only managed one more point from Fearghal, allowing Blayney to run out winners on a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-4.

Team and scorers: Ryan Shields; Pauric Murphy, Niall Treanor, Conor Burns; Brendan McQuaid, Shane Maguire (Capt.), Michael Galligan (0-1); Evan Doherty (1-0), Benin Devlin; Carl Foentjies, Turlough Clerkin, Mustafa Gamal; Anthony Croarkin, Fearghal McMahon (0-3, 1f), Paul Byrne (1-0).

Subs: Paul Smyth for Croarkin, Shane Loughran for Byrne.

All is far from lost and the lads are back in training on Thursday ahead of the championship semi. We wish Brendan McQuaid a quick recovery after he broke his collarbone in the closing minutes of Monday’s match.

Reserves: The O’Duffy Cup team have a home game against Truagh tomorrow night (Wednesday). We need a win to maintain our chances of qualifying for the semi-finals.

U-16: The Under-16 footballers will begin their championship campaign next Thursday (September 6) against the winners of this Thursday’s game between Killanny and Scotstown.

U-14: The Under-14 Division One team booked their league semi-final place with an excellent performance at home to Donaghmoyne last Saturday. Despite some wasteful finishing, our lads led by 0-5 to 0-2 at the end of the first quarter, thanks to two points each by Shane McMahon and Remy McKenna and one by Ethan Murphy. Points by Michael Mulligan, Shane and Paul Peppard got our lads off to a good start in the second quarter, before Remy stuck home the game’s opening goal, which was closely followed by another three-pointer from Shane. Points by Remy and Michael gave our lads a 2-10 to 0-5 lead at half-time. The Harps got off to a brilliant start in the third quarter with points by Remy and Michael and three goals in quick succession; the first by Jack Deery and the other two by Shane McMahon. Shane added another goal and a point, either side of another major by Michael, to keep the scoreboard ticking over. The final quarter produced a cracking goal by Remy and points by Jack (three), Michael, Aidan Burns and Remy to make the final score 8-19 to 3-10.

Team and scorers: Cathal Power; Thomas Croarkin, Anthony Greenan; Niall Ward, Ultan O’Rourke, Niall McManus; Remy McKenna (2-5, 0-1f), Paul Peppard (0-2, 1f); Jack Deery (1-3), Ethan Murphy (0-1), Aidan Burns (0-1); Shane McMahon (4-4, 0-1f, 0-1 ’45), Michael Mulligan (1-3).

Subs used: Ben Kearns-Flynn, Nathan O’Donoghue, Dylan McAree, Zach Mallon.

Recreational football: We are planning to host a recreational/Over-35 football tournament on Saturday, September 22. Keep an eye on the club notes, website etc. for more information.

Sponsored walk: The juvenile club’s annual sponsored walk takes place on Saturday, September 29 and sponsorship forms are being handed out at the moment. All support welcome.

Aido file: Players are asked to keep pushing the pool exhibition in our final fundraiser of the year! It takes place in Tír na nÓg tomorrow this Friday night, starring Ken Doherty and Irish pool champion Seán Hoey, with tickets costing €10. Hard luck to the Under-12s, who lost to Castleblayney in the semi-finals on Monday, and the U-16s, who lost to Truagh.
