U16D2 FL2012 Clontibret v Toome. A thundering ‘Star Man’ performance  by Toome’s highly motivated talisman, Aaron Kelly, lit up O’Neill Park, Clontibret, and inspired the team to an 11 point victory (2-11 to 1-5), over the home side, in a highly charged U 16 football league encounter, on Thursday, 19/07/12. Sean McMahon opened the visitor’s account with a point after 2 minutes, which was immediately followed by a similar score by James Wilson. The Saffrons opened their account two minutes later, raising a white flag. Toome was setting the agenda, playing controlled, possession football. On the 10th minute, Aaron Kelly, found himself at the end of a slick passing movement, drove through the middle and rocketed the ball into the corner of the net. One minute later, he was on song again, and he angled his shot, close to the sideline, over the bar from fully 55 metres. The Reds were re-energised at this stage, and within a minute, James spun over a score from an acute angle. Clontibret subsequently regrouped and, momentarily, stemmed the tide, with well taken points on the 22nd and 23rd minutes. The Reds responded with Frank Connolly, Aaron and James splitting the posts with super scores, on the 26th, 27th and 28th minutes, respectfully. Half time scores – Toome 1-7, Clontibret 0-3. A typical classy James point opened the second half, which was cancelled out by the O’Neills one minute later, with a similar score. On 8th, 10th, and 12th minute, Aaron went on a rampage; scoring a long range free, crashing home a fierce penalty and converting another long range shot. The home side fought back with a wonderfully worked goal after 18 minutes. They failed to raise a flag for a further 10 minutes, during which the visitors finished in style, registering telling scores by Ryan Murphy, James, and Aaron. Clontibret brought the proceedings to a close with a further point on the 28th minute. Wides – Clontibret 8, Toome 5. Brendan was totally assured, policed his area with complete confidence and could not be blamed for the goal that found his net. Hugo was terrier- like in the tackle, read the game well and made few mistakes. Darragh commanded the central position with authority, combined with sensible defending, while Kieran, who snuffed out a number of dangerous attacks, completed a highly competent full back line. Over the years, Micky Connolly, Danny Friskey and Mark McMahon have proven to be an exceptionally talented half back trio, both individually and collectively and form the fulcrum of this team. They improve with every match. Sean McMahon was terrific – he has a remarkable engine and empties the tank every match. Ryan Murphy complements Sean with his overall work rate and intelligent forays up field. He took his point particularly well. James is a most prolific scorer and his five points were extremely well executed. His tactical play was up to his usual high standard – that says it all. Francis was strong in the running and in the tackle, highly committed, and was a significant contributor to the overall team performance. Frank Connolly put in a highly competent performance- he gained a considerable amount of possession, which he put to excellent use, and his link play was of a high standard. With a tally that consisted of 2 rocket -like goals, (one from a penalty), 5 extraordinary points, a series of sublime defense splitting, pin point foot and hand passes, an exhibition in ‘old time’ high fetching, breaking through the tackles, clever stab pickups, exuding flair and leadership, Aaron Kelly, had, arguably, his best performance in the red shirt. Conan causes all kinds of problems for a full back line. Last Saturday was no exception. Ciaran McCooey was closely marked, but he still was maneuvering his position and laying off good ball. Subs Luke, Stephen, Bartek, and Mark all contributed.  Team -Brendan Cole, Hugo Connolly, Darragh McKenna, Kieran Blessing, Micky Connolly, Danny Friskey, Mark McMahon, Sean McMahon, (0-1), Ryan Murphy, (0-1), James Wilson, (0-5), Francis Cole, Frank Connolly, Aaron Kelly, (2-5), Conan McGovern, Ciaran McCooey. Subs –Luke Murtagh, Stephen Blessing, Bartek, Mark Byrne.
