Scotstown Notes

By michael Tue 5th Jun

Seniors: The Senior team were in action on Wednesday evening when Castleblayney visited Scotstown for a League fixture. The Faughs shaded a fast and competitive first half to go in at the break leading by 0-9 to 1-4. The highlight of the half for the home support was a well worked move, which resulted in a goal for Orin Heaphey. The left-footed shooting of Kieran Hughes and Paul Grant (three points) kept the Blues in the hunt during the first period. Hughes got the first score of the second half, but scores were at a premium for the next twenty minutes of the game. Rory Beggan was called into action to make a good save when the visitors got in for a goal chance, while the Faughs blazed wide from a similar opportunity a short time later. McGinnity reduced the deficit to the bare minimum with five minutes left, and Donal Morgan hit a point to equalise when it looked as if the Blues could get something from the game. Blayney regrouped though, and engineered two late points to secure the win. Final score: Scotstown 1-7 Castleblayney 0-12. Scotstown team: 1. R Beggan; 2. E. Beggan, 3. Carroll, 4. Duffy; 5. McArdle, 6. Morgan, 7. E Caulfield; 8. F Caulfield (c), 9. Turley; 10. Grant (0-3), 11. Carey, 12. Heaphey (1-0), 13. McGinnity (0-1), 14. McCague, 15. K Hughes (0-2). Substitutes used: 27. Hamill, 17. McNally, 23. C Treanor. Next on the list is an away game against Magheracloone on June 10th. B Team: The B team bowed out at the semi-final stage of the O’Duffy Cup after a tight contest against Castleblayney at Toome on Friday last. The Faughs had three points on the board before Stephen Sherry got Scotstown off the mark with a point on eleven minutes. The remainder of the first half even enough, but Castleblayney went it at the break leading by 0-6 to 0-4. Goalkeeper Mark McDevitt (in for the injured Cian Mohan) made a number of good saves to keep his side in the tie until a goal from Hamill, followed by McNally and Heaphey points put Scotstown ahead for the first time in the game. The flow of the game was disrupted by the dismissal of Daniel McNally of Scotstown and Paddy Finnegan of Castleblayney. The Faughs coped slightly better with this, and a couple of influential substitutions swung the game their way. Three points in the closing minutes secured a 0-14 to 1-9 victory. Scotstown team: Mark McDevitt; Ciaran Treanor, William Carroll (c), Mark Corrigan; Fergal McPhillips, David Caulfield, Barry McMeel; David McCague, Stephen Sherry (0-1); Mark Treanor, Paul Grant (0-4), Shane Maguire; Daniel McNally (0-3), James Hamill (1-0), Orin Heaphey (0-1).
