Under 14 – Division 3 Football Championship Final – On Tuesday 19th June the first silverware of 2012 was won by our under 14 boy’s team. The game was the second in a double header in Drumhowan with Aughnamullen as their opponents. The two teams know each other very well as they played in the league four days earlier. Also two years ago they contested the under 12 league final with Aughnamullen victorious on that occasion.

In the first quarter Aughnamullen got off to the best start and went three points up before Eire Óg settled. Three points from Conor Leonard and two from Calvin Carlisle gave our lads a one point lead at the whistle, 0-5 to 0-4. Disaster struck during the break as Francis McMahon, influential full back, was stretchered off after he landed badly on his knee. Darren Duffy went back full back with Conor Leonard moving to mid field and Kian McAree was introduced as a sub.

Things got even worse within five minutes of the restart with Aughnamullen scoring two goals and a point. The changes made after Francis’s injury started to bed down and the Eire Óg lads upped their game scoring another four points before half time, two from Conor Leonard and one each from Tommie and Paul Monaghan.

Aughnamullen started the third quarter with a two point advantage 2-5 to 0-9. This period proved to be the most competitive with both sides playing magnificent end to end football. Aughnamullen got an early goal which lobbed our keeper and a point. Eire Óg patiently took their points, two from Tommie Monaghan, one each from Calvin and Conor. After a swift move from defence to attack, Tommie Monaghan rattled their opponents net with a well placed shot. With one minute to the last break, this was the first time Eire Og took the lead. Another point was added by Conor Leonard before the short whistle. Score 1-14 to 3-6.

In the last quarter Eire Óg really showed their fitness and skill with some terrific passing moves out of defence and into the danger area. Eire Óg supremacy showed on the scoring board recording seven points to two points. Calvin Carlisle accounted for three points, Conor Leonard got two and the McAree brothers, Rigan and Kian scored a point each. The final score was 1-21 to 3-8.

This was a magnificent all round team performance. Prezmek in goals pull off two top quality saves. Donal Leonard although giving a 2 year advantage and 4 inches in height hassled and harried his opponent with great effect. Francis McMahon was just getting into his stride before his injury. Darren Duffy moved back and was very effective in the full back line. The three half backs were excellent all through. Daniel Toal and Paul Monaghan broke down the Aughnamullen attacks time after time especially in the second half. Shane Monaghan at centre half, nullified his opponent and was the catalyst for many of the Eire Og attacks. In mid field we had two of the best players in the county in Conor Leonard and Calvin Carlisle. Conor danced and dummied his way past the Aughnamullen team recording an impressive 9 points. Calvin’s physical presence went through their defence like a hot knife through butter, scoring 6 points along the way. In attack Tommie Monaghan notched up 1-3 mesmerising defenders with his dazzling runs. Rigan McAree and Blain Smith linked up well with our midfielders with great effect. In attack we had David and Goliath in the form of Kian McAree and Jason Gavin. Kian was like a little terrier and Jason was a thorn in the Aughnamullen defence the whole evening. Although not used on the night Eoin Cuscak and Darragh Hamill have made important contributions throughout the league and championship.

Great credit must go to the Eire Og management of Raymond Leonard and Gerry Reilly. The fitness and team work of the team was terrific. The team rose to every challenge, coming from seven points down on one occasion. Also the switches needed after the injury to Francis were inspired. As the game went on the team became more confident and showcased their ability. Eire Og out scored their opponents by 22 scores to 11 scores, which was a fair indication of supremacy of the north Monaghan side.

The Eire Óg team was: Prezmek Karkut,Francis McMahon, Donal Leonard, Regan McAree, Shane Monaghan, Daniel Toal, Calvin Carlisle,Darren Duffy, Paul Monaghan, Conor Leonard, Blain Smith, Jason Gavin, Tommie Monaghan Subs: Eoin Cusack, Kian McAree, Darragh Hamill
