Stephen answers Monaghan’s call: For Toome’s midfielder, Stephen Lambe, 2012 has been, so far, quite a roller-coaster, from starring for Toome, who was recently promoted to Intermediate ranks after 30 + years, to overcome Donaghamoyne and Rockcorry in the Intermediate football league, to keeping the score board ticking over with Castleblayney hurlers and contributing handsomely to Monaghan’s hurling success, in reaching the All Ireland Final of the Alliance Hurling League, Roinn3A. Inexplicably, however, Monaghan hurlers were denied their place in the sun, but it’s an ill wind…as fate would have it, Monaghan Rugby IST XV had qualified to play in the final of the Gorden West Cup Final in Ravenhill, Belfast, on the same week end that the Hurling Final was to take place.  Monaghan Rugby Club, who was competing for their first senior trophy in nearly thirty years, was pitted against Tyrone’s high flying Strabane IST XV, called up Stephen to join the squad.   On 48 minutes, with the score at 3 -0 in Monaghan’s favour, Stephen was called upon to take over the pivotal no 10, playmaker, fly half position, during a period of Strabane possession; this was however short-lived with Stephen excelling with a relieving kick. Monaghan bravely opted for touch with a penalty with Stephen brilliantly planting the ball five metres from the goal line, which resulted in a try. Stephen duly converted and Monaghan led by 10 -0 with 20 minutes on the clock.  Strabane was penalised and Stephen slotted over the penalty into the wind and the Toome man’s success opened up a crucial ten points between the teams. Three minutes after Monaghan’s try, Strabane got their first score, three points, of the afternoon. Strabane exerted serious pressure over the ten remaining minutes, and eventually scored an unconverted try, giving a final score of 13 -8, in favour of a jubilant Monaghan team. Apart from scoring a penalty and a conversion, the Toome talisman excelled in every aspect of the game from his astute and accurate kicking, linking play and options taken.  The Toome GAA congratulates their multi-talented and highly respected midfielder; he is a credit to his family, club and community. Form is temporary, class, like common decency, is permanent. Fair play to you, Stevie!
