Scotstown Notes

November 10th, 2011

Reserve Division One:Scotstown faced up to local rivals Truagh in the Reserve League Division One Final on Sunday at Tyholland. Truagh probably went into the game as slight favourites despite having finished five points behind leaders Scotstown in the table. The sides had met three times during the year – they drew back in April in the league, Truagh had a comprehensive win in the championship in June, and they followed that with a four point league win in September. It was the Blues however who made the brighter start to this final, with Shane Carey converting two free-kicks in the opening seven minutes.  Captain Paul Donaghue got Truagh off the mark in the twelfth minute, and then levelled things on nineteen minutes with another point. Truagh began to dictate things during the second quarter. Christopher McKenna and the experienced Gary Meehan added points put their team two ahead. On twenty-five minutes, Shane Carey helped himself to a third pointed free of the day to bring the gap back to the minimum. Coming up to the break, both sides swapped points – the Scotstown point was an excellent finish from William Carroll after a raid forward from full-back. That left the half-time score at 0-5 to 0-4 in favour of Truagh.
The second period was only a few minutes old when the Scotstown management team decided a change was required. James Hamill and Elliott Maguire came on as part of a double substitution, but Truagh took advantage of the reorganisation to register another point to put them two ahead. The changes began to have the desired effect though, as Stephen Sherry sent over a point in the 41st minute, followed five minutes later by another William Carroll point to level the game. Christopher McKenna converted another free to put Truagh back in front, but they wasted a number of chances to score from play during an important stage of the game. Shane Carey got his fourth point of the day to make it seven points apiece on 49 minutes. Substitute James Hamill caused real problems for the Truagh defence when he ran at them down the left, before cutting inside along the end-line and knocking over an inspirational score for his team. His fellow substitute Elliott Maguire was not to be outdone, and he kicked a useful point to make it nine points to seven for Scotstown. Christopher McKenna knocked over another free for Truagh, but in the very next attack Scotstown were able to get Hamill on the ball again, and he made no mistake in sending the ball over the bar. Truagh went in search of the goal that would win it for them, but had to make do with a point. James Hamill had the final say though, with the last point of the game to give Scotstown a 0-11 to 0-9 victory. It was a good way to round off a very consistent league campaign – well done to all involved with the B squad throughout the year.

U13’s: Participated in a four team tournament in Derrylaughan last Sunday involving the hosts, Swatragh, Armagh Harps and Scotstown. The hosts proved too strong foe Scotstown in the opening game, the boys then followed this up with a one point victory over Armagh harps in the Shield final. Congrats to James Sherry who received the Man of the Match award in the final and also to Conor Creighan who won the Lough Neagh Iner County stone skimming competition with a spectacular effort which skimmed the surface no less than 15 times

U12’s: Made the trip to Mullagh last Saturday and participated in an inter-county blitz. In the group stages we played four matches, overcoming Westminstown, Dublin and Killinkere whilst losing to Gowna and Maghers in close hard fought encounters. This meant we qualified for the shield semi-final in which we played fantastic to overcome the host Cuchulainns. In the final our lads continued to play excellent football and ran out convincing winners over Knockbride. They are on the road again this Saturday when they travel to Derryloughlin to participate in their tournament.

Best wishes: The club would like to extend good wishes to former chairman Gene Mc Cague and multiple championship winning manager Liam Stirrat who both had some re-conditioning work carried out recently. Could they be considering a comeback?
