CLUB NOTES

7th June 2011

Platinum Tanks Reserve Football Championship

Last Friday evening (3rd June) our reserve team saw off the challenge from Fergal O’Hanlon’s in emphatic style to progress to the next round of the Platinum Tanks reserve football championship. While the final score-line shows a twelve point victory and insinuates this was a comfortable victory for our reserve team, and towards the end it probably was. However, it was not all fun and games particularly during the first half where our display was topsy-turvy and although we had our fair share of possession our play was error ridden with poor passing and wayward shooting.  At the end of the first half Fergal O’Hanlon’s seemed to be in a good position as they enjoyed a two point lead, leading 0-4 to 1-3. Thankfully, during the second half we completely transformed and were in prolific scoring form as we notched up an impressive 1-13 to their 0-2 to emerge victorious on a final score-line Rockcorry 1-17 Fergal O’Hanlon’s 1-5. Championship “Buzz”

The summer is truly here folks as the race for the McGuigan Builders intermediate football championship commences this weekend and the senior team warmed up for our highly anticipated clash against Currin with a decent showing against Toome in last Saturday’s challenge match and many thanks to the Toome club for facilitating the game. After the match I caught up with our senior team manager Cormac McFadden and he stated that “while we were missing a number of regulars it was a useful run-out as it  gave some of the fringe players a chance to stake a claim on a position that maybe up for grabs”. He also pointed out “that it was good to see the return of Paul McKeown in the green & white colours after a layoff due to a recent knee injury and he will be a welcome boost to the panel”. When asked about the performance of the team he remarked “I was quite happy with the level of performance and particularly the effort and determination shown by all players and for most parts they looked sharp”. He did point out, however that “this weekend we are facing a massive challenge as we take on Currin in the first round of the Intermediate championship and they (Currin) have already defeated us in the league campaign and will provide a stern test this Sunday”. He continued by staying that “we will have to produce one of our best ever displays if we are to progress to the next round” and he called on “all Rock fans to support the team this Sunday as this game has the ingredients of a real classic and should be a very exciting game of football and looked forward to the encounter”. I just want to echo Cormac’s comments and urge all our supporters to go and cheer on our senior team this Sunday at Gavin Duffy Park, Monaghan at 1.30pm and hopefully we can look forward to a sporting game of football and the right result. Best of luck to Cormac. Mickey, David and all the lads.

Traditional Hay Festival

The committee is making plans to hold another vintage hay making day on the weekend 23rd & 24th July. I am sure you will agree that last year’s event was a fantastic day and this year’s promises to be another great day’s entertainment and will be a great opportunity for families to come together and see how things were done years ago. When further details develop I will let you know. Let’s hope the sun will still be shining brightly!

Hard Luck

Hard luck to the Monaghan senior team who put in a courageous and spirited performance against Tyrone last Sunday but unfortunately it was not enough on the day and Tyrone secured the win by a couple of points. Keep the heads up lads and be ready for the back door campaign. Best of luck.

Juvenile Mentors

At a recent committee meeting our chairman Jimmy McGeough and our Youth Officer Pascal Smyth paid tribute to the entire panel of juvenile mentors and coaches for the time and effort they spend coaching and looking after our juvenile teams. You are performing an invaluable service to your club and community and we sincerely thank you for your efforts. Keep up the good work.
