Monaghan Under-16’s exit Ulster Championship

Monaghan’s hopes to bring home an Ulster title at Under-16 level were dashed on Saturday last when they were defeated in the final of the Ulster Shield by a very strong Tyrone side.

The game was played in Moortown Co. Tyrone and in spite of the high stakes, it was played in a very sporting manner. Both sides had scoring opportunities in the opening minutes but it was 12 minutes into the game before Tyrone penetrated the Monaghan defence with a well taken goal. Monaghan did have good possession but failed to capatilise  on some goal-mouth scuffles before Tyrone added to their tally with a further goal and 3 points. As the first half drew to an end, Monaghan did get on to the scoreboard with a fine point from Ailbhe Boyle to leave the halftime score at 2 goals 3 points to 1 point.

Monaghan faced a stiff breeze and an uphill battle in the second half but fought hard and never gave up holding Tyrone to scoring just 1 point for most of the second half. However the loss of three players due to injury was a major blow and in the dying minutes of the game, Tyrone added another goal and 1 point to their tally.

The disappointment was evident on the faces of the Monaghan girls but they can be proud of their efforts and hopefully will have gained a lot from the experience of being in an Ulster Final.
