Carrickmacross and Inniskeen started the McElvaney Waste & Recycling Intermediate Football Championship with hard-earned wins in last Sunday’s preliminary-round double-header in Castleblayney. Seán Downey’s haul of 1-10 saw Carrick past a spirited Blackhill side, for whom ten points from Michael Geehan couldn’t inspire a winning return to the IFC.

Last year’s JFL winners Toome also put up a good showing in their step up to the IFC, but they fell just short against Inniskeen. Dónal (1-3), Paul (0-5) and Ronan (0-3) Meegan led the scoring for Inniskeen, with Michael Fitzpatrick getting their other goal and Gerard McArdle gaining the bulk of possession at midfield. Youngsters James Wilson and Frank Connolly hit 1-8 between them for Toome, but although they cut an eight-point deficit to three, Wilson (who had earlier netted a penalty) saw his second spot-kick tipped over the bar by Inniskeen keeper Pauric Dowdall.
