Currin 1972 Team-50th Anniversary
On 19th November, 1972, Currin regained the Junior Championship with a deserved win over keen rivals Cremartin on a score line of 0-7 to 0-3. While the score line suggests a defensive game, it was anything but. The Mick Quigley managed Currin dominated the first half but only led at half time by two points to one with the scores coming from Dermot Beattie and Pat Mc Kiernan. Captain Aidan Quigley extended the lead and Niall Murphy at midfield and Dermot
Beattie tagged on vital scores in the second half to see the Currin men home on a final score of 0-7 to 0-3. Niall Murphy at midfield was majestic throughout and was ably supported by the wholehearted Paul Mc Caffrey. Dermot Beatty, Aidan Quigley and Philip Mc Entee formed a half forward line that was on top from start to finish. Jim Hughes Jody Martin and Sean Quigley played their part and the introduction of Sean Connolly and ‘Big’ Pat Mc Kiernan turned the tide in our favour. It’s said that defences win games and forwards decide by ‘how much’, and this was certainly the case in this game. That Cremartin were restricted to only three points in the entire game is testament to the performance of the Currin rearguard. Mickey Maguire and Gerry Kennedy either side of the rock solid Pauric McCaffrey were in brilliant form on the day. The last line of defence Liam Quigley, Peter Mc Kiernan and the youthful Hugo Clerkin did not concede a score on the day, such was their dominance. In Goals Mickey Connolly took off two great saves when needed. Panel members who contributed in the wins up to the final included Vincent Connolly, Hubert Kearns, Pat Whitney and the injured Ty Mc Entee.
So after 50 years it’s good to remember this team especially those who have gone to their eternal reward, Liam Quigley, Aidan Quigley, Sean Connolly, Vincent Connolly, Gerry Kennedy, Dermot Beattie and Mick Quigley. Go nDeana dia trochaire ar a ainm dilis.
Thanks to Hugo Clerkin for these lovely words.
Well done to Jack McCarron who is one of the recipients selected for an All-Star award on the Monaghan Junior Football Championship team.
