Blackhill Emeralds Club Notes: 01/12/22

Seán Mac Thaidhg, An Both. R.I.P.

Blackhill Emeralds GAA Club wish to sincerely express our sympathy to the McCague family and to Scotstown GAA Club following Seán’s passing last week.

Seán’s achievements stand alone as the revered architect of modern Monaghan GAA. In raising a county who had last tasted success between the World Wars, the 1979 Anglo Celt was the spark that changed our counties destiny. One photograph of that homecoming on display in and taken from outside Vincent Tavey’s in Market Square captured the sheer unadulterated joy of it all. In those days as a child, it was confusing how so many Monaghan adults openly proclaimed to be Down, Cavan or Kerry supporters. Seán and his teams through the 1980’s put an end to that, radicalising the youth by allowing us all walk-up Jones road as good as anyone and afraid of no one. Seán in his time changed Monaghan from a small county into the fiercely proud football county that has now been woven into our DNA and we will be eternally grateful for the gift of his talent, life and service. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a-nAnamachta dhílis.

Blackhill Emeralds GAA AGM took place on Friday November 25th last. The meeting was very well attended and all the positions were filled on the night. Chairperson Paddy McBride thanked outgoing club treasurer Kieran Duffy who had served five years in the role and also Sean Duffy who stepped down after five years as bingo sub-committee treasurer. Kevin Duffy was welcomed as incoming club treasurer. The outgoing team management of Pauric Treanor and Paul Curran were wished every success in their new role with the county U-20’s. Aiden Little was a worthy recipient of club person of the year for 2022 after a contested ballot.
