Junior League Final

St.Mary’s Park Castleblayney was the setting for our Dr.Ward Cup League Final against Clones last Saturday afternoon. Although still hurting from the Championship Final defeat a week earlier, there was a steely determination etched on the faces of every Geraldine’s player on entering the dressing rooms that we were not going to leave it behind today. A fast start was required and to their credit a fast start was exactly what we got. Unbelievably after only 13 minutes the match was virtually over as a contest as we steamrolled our way into a 13-point lead. It was the Eddie Walsh show for the first 5 minutes as he hit 1-02, a point after 2 minutes, a mark a minute later and palmed the ball to the net in the 5th minute of play. Five minutes later Mark Grimes also had the ball in the Clones net after creating the chance himself and sliding it under the hapless keeper, then Danny Leegan found space to add another point to the tally. The Clones defence were at sixes & sevens and a misplaced kick-out let Eddie Walsh in again who made no mistake in punishing the error and slotting the ball home off his left. Dean Connolly then got in on the act to fire over a great point after 13 minutes to leave the score 3-04 to 0-00 – it was frantic stuff and there was certainly no let up in that opening quarter. Clones who were understandably stunned (as were most of the crowd to be fair), finally got on the scoreboard in the 14th minute with a point from play but it took all of 10 minutes before the next score was registered, a free for Clones in the 24th minute. Eddie Walsh though cancelled that score out with a nice point from play before Clones responded with another point. Heading into 1st half injury time, 11 points up, we were more than contented with our performance, but Killian Collins had other ideas as he chased a hopeful ball out to the corner flag, managed to turn his marker, darted in along the end line and fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the Clones net. As the ref blew for half-time the scoreboard read 4-05 to 0-03. Murmurs could be heard from the stand during the break, ‘if only we’d played like this last week’ – but last week was gone, it was all about the performance today and this was more like the form we knew we were capable of. Expecting a Clones backlash, we started the 2nd half in pretty much the same vain, early points from Danny Leegan & Eddie Walsh (2 frees) increasing our lead. However, Clones were not for lying down and scored a good point on 34 mins, then in the next attack gave themselves a gilt-edged goal chance but Kian Duffy got down smartly to make a great save and keep his goal intact. Two more points for Clones saw them chip away at our lead but we decided to make some changes to freshen things up and maintain the dominance around the middle. Eddie Walsh tagged on 2 more frees and entering the final quarter this left the score 4-10 to 0-06. With 5 minutes remaining Leego ventured forward to get his customary score off the left to send the already celebrating sideline team into full voice. Clones had the final say with a trio of late points, but the victory was well and truly established by

then thanks to an emphatic 1st half performance. Final score, Killanny 4-11 Clones 0-09. All that was left, was for Ronan & Tiernan Duffy to accept the Dr.Ward Cup and the celebrations began!!
