Junior Championship Final
On arrival in Aughnamullen last Saturday afternoon and being greeted with the wind & rain coming in sideways, we knew it wasn’t going to be pretty. The conditions spoiled what could have been another classic between these 2 teams and in the end the only thing between us was an unfortunate bounce of the ball on the wet surface with 10 minutes remaining which ended up in the back of our net. Although the conditions were the same for both teams there could be no free-flowing football as the pitch was more akin to an ice rink. Playing with the elements in the 1st half, Clones started the brighter and were 2 points up after 7 minutes. Eddie Walsh eventually got us off the mark with a free after 11 minutes. Clones responded 5 minutes later to restore their 2-point advantage, but it took all of 13 more minutes before the next score was registered, another free from Eddie Walsh to leave the half-time score 0-03 to 0-02 in favour of Clones. Although we hadn’t managed to score from play at all in the 1st half, we would have been quietly contented to be only 1 behind coming out for the 2nd half. Clones on the other hand passed up the better chances and would have felt they should’ve been further ahead. A big opportunity for us arrived in the opening minute of the 2nd half when a high ball in was punched goalward by Jack Kiernan only to rebound off the post and leave the Clones goal intact. Moments later though we found the equalizer from an Eddie Walsh free but parity was short lived as Clones again found the target to restore their 1-point lead. We were beginning to find a foothold in the game eventually and a great piece of play from Danny Leegan saw him make space from nowhere and fire over a superb point to level things once more. We took the opportunity to make some substitutions at this point as there were some tired bodies on the pitch given the sluggish conditions. Clones again regained the lead from a free on 40 minutes before Jack Kiernan curled over a 35-yarder to again tie things up. It really was anyone’s game at this point and when Danny Leegan again fired over a great score from play to edge us into the lead for the 1st time in the contest, Clones for the first time looked rattled. That was until the deciding moment in the match….a free on our ’45 yard line just right of centre in the 50th minute was played short and fed out to the corner, the Clones corner forward took a hopeful shot at the target but his effort fell short and bounced & skidded up past the grasp of Kian Duffy and ended up in the net – just one of those freak incidents but in the context of this game a major moment and a deciding factor on where victory would go. So 2 points down with 8 minutes to play, the shock of what had just happened resonated through the team for a few moments and Clones were just able to manage the game out with some periods of keep-ball and in fact had the final say in the match with another point from play to leave the scoreboard showing 1-06 to 0-06 at the end. Well done to Clones on their victory but from our perspective, a harsh ending to what was a flawless Championship campaign but all
focus now turns to the League Final next Saturday when we will again face Clones and hope to capture the Dr.Ward Cup
