Historic Weekend For Corduff Gaels And Corduff Ladies!
What a weekend last weekend proved to be for Corduff Gaels and Corduff Ladies! It’s a rare enough occurrance for a Corduff team to reach senior ranks, it has happened for the men once before in 1998 but until last weekend the Ladies never tasted senior football. That all changed at the weekend with both teams promoted.
On Friday night, Corduff Ladies, the 2022 Intermediate League title holders played Truagh in the Intermediate Championship Final. Going into this encounter the expectation was that Truagh would be victorious. How wrong that expectation would prove to be! Truagh did establish an early lead but that was to be short lived as the Corduff Ladies took control from mid way through the first half, a lead which they would build on and go in at the interval ahead on a scoreline of 1-05 to 0-3.The 3rd quarter was a low scoring event but the closing stages were dominated by Corduff. The final whistle led to joyous scenes as Corduff Ladies were crowned Intermediate Champions, doing the 2022 double! Congratulations to the team and management Sean , David, Darragh and Paraic on this super achievement. Also congratulations to Laura on picking up the Player Of The Match award. The future is certainly exciting for the Ladies as their Ulster campaign throws-in in a couple of weeks and then of course Senior football in 2023!
On Sunday the Senior men played Toome in Inniskeen in the Intermediate Championship Semi-Final. A win was a must for a spot in the final plus promotion to senior ranks for only the second time in the club’s history. Toome made that prospect a difficult one for Corduff as they got off to a commanding lead in the first quarter which they maintained right up to the half time whistle going in 1-06 to 0-4 ahead. Corduff regrouped at half time and gradually reduced Toome’s lead in the second half going level in the 27th minute with the sides level again on 0-12 to 1-9 at the final whistle pushing the game to Extra Time. At halftime in Extra Time Corduff were ahead by a point and with 10 minutes left they needed to maintain that lead which they did in super style winning on a score line of 1-14 to 1-11 by the final whistle, hence not only booking a spot in the Intermediate Championship for 2023 but also going senior for only the second time in the club’s history! Congratulations to the team, Manage Seamus and his backroom team.
So, that’s the story of the very historic weekend for Corduff Gaels and Ladies when both codes were promoted to senior ranks for 2023.
The Intermediate Championship Final is on Sunday 23rd October against neighbours Magheracloone. Now’s the time to get your colours out! Flags and bunting are available to purchase from Gifts N Things so get yours before they are sold out!
