Junior Championship

We travelled to St.Tiernachs Park last Saturday evening to take on Clknes in our last group match in the JFC. With barely a minute on the clock Danny Leegan had the ball in the back of the Clones net, capitalising on a line ball decision which looked like it should have gone to the home side, but the referee overruled his lineman, awarding it to us. Clones were quick to respond though and converted a good score from play which Dean Connolly cancelled out moments later. Clones were playing some fast-moving football and cut us open twice in quick succession pointing to close the gap to just one before Eddie Walsh scored a good point from play. Clones were soon level though and their quick transitions through the middle were certainly causing trouble in our defence and they hit two more points in the space of a minute. It was end-to-end stuff and the next four points were shared to keep the tie evenly balanced with halftime approaching. Then a moment of quick thinking from Dean Connolly saw him float a lovely ball in over the Clones defence in to the hands of Jack Kiernan who made no mistake in finding the top corner of the Clones net. We barely had time to regroup though as Clones again went direct from the kick out and had the ball in the back of our net within a minute…. what a game we had…. Eddie Walsh then converted a free but again Clones countered with another point to leave things all square at the break 2-05 to 1-08.

Straight from the second half throw-in Clones we’re awarded a free on the 14-yard line but after discussions with his umpires the ref changed his mind and awarded a penalty which was duly converted. Eddie Walsh steadied us with a point from a free then Cillian Leegan got it back to one with a good score. It was point for point then with Mark Grimes & Jack Kiernan swapping points with the dangerous Clones attack, but it took a great score from Kyle Connolly in the 50th minute to restore parity. Killian Collins got his just reward for a stellar performance when he floated over a lovely score to edge us in front and it looked Clones were beginning to tire and we would push on to victory, but far from it…. Clones rallied strongly and hit 2 more good scores to edge themselves in front again with just 7 minutes left on the clock. A converted free in the 57th minute then had them 2 points up and perhaps they started looking for the finish line, but we showed great character to stick at it and sub Stephen McMahon came in for the last 5 minutes and his first touch was to tap over from close range. We searched for the equaliser, and it duly came again from the boot of Stephen McMahon from a free. On the resulting kick-out the referee blew for fulltime at 2-13 apiece and to be honest a draw was probably a fair result although both sides will feel they could have won it. The result means both teams are through to the quarter finals having tied for top spot in the group and no doubt another battle or two to look forward to later in the season.

Our quarter final match will be against Eire Og and is fixed for Castleblayney next Saturday 17th Sept at 3pm as part of a double header with Oram & Drumhowan. Best of luck lads!

Our U-13’s were beaten by Corduff in the Div 3 Cup play-off last Wednesday evening 4-09 to 1-05.

Next up for our U-17’s in the Div 2 Championship is a trip to Clones on Sunday 18th Sept at 12.00pm
