Junior Championship

We travelled to Drumhowan for our second match in this years Junior Championship and having suffered a one-point defeat to the homesters in the league earlier in the year, a little bit of spice was added to this repeat match. We made a lively start and Eddie Walsh had a goal & a point to his name after only 6 minutes. Drumhowan then converted a free before Eddie Walsh converted one for us to take us in to the first water break 4 points to the good. Another free from Eddie extended this lead but Drumhowan who had missed some good chances early doors hit back with another free. We were riding our luck at times as Drumhowan were wasteful in front of goal, but this was not the case for us as Eddie Walsh took possession out wide on the forty and fired over a lovely score to put us 5 up. Our dominance was evident heading into the final 5 minutes of the first half and when Danny Leegan won the ball 40 meters from goal, he made a jinking run through the defence and despite losing control of the ball at the wrong moment he managed to poke the loose ball into the net and give us an 8-point lead. Kyle Connolly, who had been introduced early for the injured Conor Vernon, then pointed in good style before Drumhowan had the last say of the half with a point which would be their first from open play to leave the halftime score 2-05 to 0-03.

The second half in all honesty was a disappointment from our perspective when a combination of loose play, possible effects from the 30 degree heat and a much improved Drumhowan performance saw us fail to push on and for most part play second fiddle to Drumhowan – who I’m sure would be thinking if they had been more accurate in front of goal would surely have gotten closer to us at the end. Indeed, the first two scores of the 2nd half went to a more determined Drumhowan team, and it wasn’t until the 41st minute that we got our first score of the second period. This after subs Gavin Flanagan & Daryl Traynor had been introduced to freshen things up. Eddie Walsh then tagged on two more frees just before the second water break to keep our lead at 8. Again, Drumhowan were fastest out of the blocks from the break in play and had 2 quick points on the board before Cillian Leegan cancelled one out on 52 mins. Drumhowan had some good possessions in the next 5 mins but only managed 2 scores but an inspirational score from Gavin Flanagan kept distance between the teams and at the end of what could only be described as a tough battle in intense heat, we were only too happy to come away with any sort of victory. Some improvement will be required when it comes to the latter stages of this competition but all in all its 2 from 2 in the Championship so far. Final score Drumhowan 0-09; Killanny 2-09

Next up we are at home to Killeevan on Sun 4th Sept at 5.00pm
