Reserve League Final
We made the short journey into Emmet Park Carrickmacross last Friday evening to take on neighbours Magheracloone in the Platinum Tanks Div 1B Reserve league Final. We made a dream start with Mark Grimes crashing home a goal in the 4th minute followed by a Darren Leegan point. The Mitchells picked off a couple of points either side of a Jack Kiernan free, but disaster no.1 struck in the 12th minute when a hopeful floated ball in on our goal was misjudged in the wind by our keeper and sailed over his head and into the net. We recovered well though and had that goal cancelled out within the next 6 minutes with good scores from Conor Grimes, a Jack Kiernan free & a super effort from Cillian McGahon. It was Jack Kiernan who then edged us back in front with another good free kick. Magheracloone though weren’t for lying down and hit back with the next 2 points to leave just a single point in it approaching halftime. Callum Murray extended our lead a minute later, but the Mitchells kept tabs with the final score of the half to leave just 1 in it at the break. Jack Kiernan, having missed a couple early doors had found his range and glided over another great free at the start of the second half. Magheracloone, having introduced a couple of subs at the break cancelled this out straight away and then found the equalizer in the 37th minute. It really was ebbing & flowing and Conor Grimes was the man in space who collected the ball on the forty and floated over a good score to edge us ahead once more. However, further compounding disaster no.1 in the 1st half, disaster no.2 occurred in the 40th minute. We won a free on the halfway line and instead of looking for movement in the forward line we chose to play the ball back to our keeper who had advanced out beyond the 21-yard line. The Magheracloone forwards rushed in forcing a turnover and found the shooter who looped the ball over our keepers’ head into an empty net. Certainly a score which knocked the stuffing out of us and impacted the end result there and then. Michael Vernon was introduced as substitute and hit a good score to close us to within 1 again but a series of missed opportunities left us unable to claw back the difference. We perhaps had a shout for a penalty in the dying moments with what looked like a foot block in the box but after consulting with
his umpires the referee decided against it and blew for full time. Final score Magheracloone 2-10; Killanny 1-11.
Our U-13’s are away to Currin this Saturday 6th Aug in round 1 of the Div 3 Cup – throw-in is at 11am
Hard luck to our U-15’s who were defeated by Aghabog in a goal fest in Killanny in the play-off final last Thursday 7-12 to 4-15
