Seniors: The Seniors made a winning start to their Championship campaign with a dramatic late comeback against Clontibret on Sunday. The last time these sides met in the Senior Championship a late equalizer from Conor McManus saw the honours even but this time it would be the Fontenoys who would provide the extra time excitement with a 1-1 salvo to seal a deserved 2 point win.
Clontibret opened the scoring with an early point but Donaghmoyne hit back with a Ronan McDonald free and a Stephen Finnegan point from play. The hosts equalized only for Davy Garland to edge Donaghmoyne back into the lead on 13 minutes. Clontibret hit back again but Donaghmoyne replied with two points from Ronan McDonald and Stephen Finnegan, Clontibret pulled one back but Declan Courtney had the perfect response with a point followed by a brilliantly executed goal from a pin point Donaghy pass which moved Donaghmoyne into a 5 point lead on 23 minutes. Clontibret hit the last two scores of a frenetic first half to leave the score 0-7 to 1-6 at the break. Clontibret opened the second half scoring and the game was point for point until a Penalty moved the hosts into a one point lead after 7 minutes. The game remained tight with a series of Davy Garland frees keeping the Fontenoys on level terms. Clontibret hit 3 unanswered points to move into a 3 point lead with two minutes of normal time to go, but Donaghmoyne were not giving up and a Liam McDonald free closed the gap to two with four additional minutes to play. Donaghmoyne kept applying pressure in search of a goal and managed to force an error from the Clontibret defence deep into injury time which allowed Liam McDonald to raise the green flag and put Donaghmoyne into a one point lead. A break from Captain Mickey Murnaghan set up Davy Garland for another point and Donaghmoyne looked home and hosed but there was still time for more drama as Clontibret swarmed forward looking for a score, a goal mouth scramble ensued and a snap shot was well saved by keeper Shane Garland, the Fontenoy defence held firm and cleared their lines to claim their first Senior Championship win in 20 years. Final Score 1-13 to 2-12.
Well done to all the team and management on a super performance and a great way to christen the new away jerseys which were kindly sponsored by McCaugheys Deli. The next Championship game is with Ballybay in Donaghmoyne this Saturday at 7.00pm. Please come along and support the team.
U13s: There was a disappointing start for both U13 teams in the championship, the A team lost away to Kileevan on Saturday morning and the B team lost out to Clontibret on Sunday. Hard Luck Lads.
U17s: The U17s lost out to Killanny in the Div 2 shield semi-final on Tuesday last. Playing against a strong wind in the first half Donaghmoyne were struggling to clear their lines while the home team were taking some fine scores with the aid of the breeze. The Fontenoys rallied in the second half and created some good goal opportunities but couldn’t capitalise on their chances. Final score 3-15 to 1-7.
Senior Ladies: Congratulations to the Donaghmoyne Ladies who claimed another Senior League title on Sunday evening in Drumhowan with a convincing win over Emyvale. Also well done to Tara McArdle, Roisin Lennon & Grace Cum
