Aughnamullen Club Notes

The Late Tommy Murtagh: On Friday last sad news emerged around our community with the passing of Tommy Murtagh. Tommy was a life long supporter of our club from its inception to the present day. He always had great pleasure in supporting the Sarsfield’s from his brother Noel playing, to all his children wearing the blue jersey throughout the intervening years and more recently his grandchildren. He was always on hand to support the club in any fundraising initiatives the club under took. Also any functions the club had in the community centre Tommy would be there alongside his wife Margaret and family members. Tommy always had a smile on his face and always kept a keen interest in how the club was performing. Truly one of the clubs finest and a true gentleman. May he rest in peace

Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Margaret, Daughter Maria, Sons Gerry, Tom, Jake, Paddy, Charlie and Michael, brother Noel, Sisters Kathleen & Sr. Bernadette, Daughters in law, Grandchildren and extended family members may he rest in peace.

Seniors: On Sunday evening our seniors travelled to Ballybay for our second game in the Senior Championship, where they were beaten on a scoreline of 3-14 to 1-14. After a cagey opening five minutes for both sides, Ballybay found the net with a rasper of a shot from Paul Finlay to open the scoring. Aughnamullen responded with a 45 from Micheál Bannigan and a point from Joel Wilson to close the gap to one, but another point from Bannigan with a free was followed by a strong final ten minutes of the half by the hosts, opening up a five point lead. A brilliant free kick from the left boot of Jason Duffy drew the first half to a close which was a much needed score for Aughnamullen to leave the score at 1-05 to 0-04 at the break. Aughnamullen started the second half brightly, with scores coming from Bannigan, Stephen Geoghegan and Pete Dooney to leave just a goal between the sides. A fatal number of minutes followed for Aughnamullen, with the concession of 2 goals and

a point in the space of two minutes seemingly killing the game off and burying any chances of a comeback, with the gap now stretched out to eleven points. However, this only inspired the lads to rally back at Ballybay and, following a point from Kevin Sheridan which was equalled by a Ballybah score, a period followed in which Aughnamullen scored 1-05 without reply, putting immense pressure on the hosts. Our goal came from a thunderbolt from the impressive Stephen Geoghegan into the top corner, as well as a hat-trick of points from his brother Darren and a further score from Micheál Bannigan to once again bring it back to a one goal game. The introduction of a number of experienced and quality players to see the game out for Ballybay ensured that the hosts ran out winners after a late scare. There is a week break before county champions Scotstown come to Sarsfield Park on Saturday the 3rd of September at 3pm, where the lads will be looking to respond in what is a big game in deciding our fate in this year’s Championship.

Minors play Scotstown in the first round of the championship on the 8th of September.

Congratulations to our u14s who have booked their place in the division 2 championship final on Monday night. The girls got off to a great start with a cracking goal. The forwards pressurised the Harps’ backs in the first half but were unlucky to miss some goal opportunities. Aughnamullen frustrated Harps as they were denied multiple goal chances and the backs worked hard and turned over the Harps’ attacking efforts.

The girls continued to work hard in the second half to retain their lead. Although it was a low scoring game the girls showed great determination to get over the line. Final score 1:04-0:02.

They play Killanny in the final in 2 weeks.
