Seniors: On Saturday afternoon last, we took on Clontibret in what was our first Senior Championship game in 26 years. In what was a blistering heat, Aughnamullen got off to a bright start in front of the large crowd in attendance, opening up an early two point lead with points from Colin Clerkin and Micheál Bannigan. Clontibret made a rapid response to level the game up with 10 minutes on the clock. The visitors built on this momentum to go two points up, however Aughnamullen rallied back with points from Darren Geoghegan and Pete Dooney to leave the sides level at the first water break at 0-04 0-04. 1-02 without reply from the visitors within five minutes of the water break gave them a strong lead, and was arguably the period of the game which beat Aughnamullen. A brilliant score from Pete Dooney and a point from Kevin Sheridan was all we could add to the scoreboard before half time, with Clontibret leading by seven at the break on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-06. Clontibret started the second half in the same manner they finished the first, with a level of intensity the boys couldn’t match, showing to be extremely efficient on the point taking front. The forward display from the visitors, led by the class of Conor McManus proved to be too strong for the lads on the day and despite further scores from Geoghegan, Clerkin, Bannigan and a late score from Kieran Duffy, Clontibret ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-19 to 0-13. The team will no doubt learn from this experience against top quality opposition, and will look to respond this weekend in their second game of the Championship away to Ballybay this Sunday at 5pm. Come out and show the lads your support, best of luck to the team and management.

Juveniles:

Under 17s: Our Under 17 team took on Killanny in the Division 2 Shield Final on Tuesday evening in Carrickmacross, unfortunately losing out on a scoreline of 1-13 to 3-03. Killanny started the game the stronger opening up an early lead and showing signs of dominance, which was the trend of the first half. A resolute Aughnamullen defense held Killanny to limited scores and when the opportunity came, the boys took it with brilliant scores from Bobby McCaul, Cormac McNally and Christopher

Geoghegan giving Aughnamullen a foothold in the game before half time. A well worked team move was finished off by Bobby McCaul to find the net, in what was the first of three goals for McCaul. A hopeful ball into the square was palmed in by McCaul before the break to leave the sides level at 1-06 to 2-03. Killanny came out strong in the second half and built on a lead which couldn’t be overturned by Aughnamullen, with more clinical play from the opposition on show. Aughnamullen struggled to trouble the Killanny defense and despite a late Bobby McCaul goal, Killanny held out to run out winners. Commiserations to the team and management. We wish a speedy recovery to the Killanny player who got badly injured in the game. Our Under 17s begin their Division 2 Championship campaign on Monday evening the 22nd of August away to Clontibret at 7.15pm. Best of luck to the team and management, all support welcome.

Under 15s: Our Under 15 B team played against Scotstown in the Division 5A shield final on Monday evening in Rockcorry, where they were beaten on a scoreline of 6-13 to 0-10. Scotstown got off to a strong start, immediately getting off the mark with a number of points and scoring a goal before our lads could get off the mark. Aughnamullen settled down and came into the game, however it was Scotstown’s ability to score goals which always left the lads with a lot to do. While they both traded points in the first half, it was four Scotstown goals that separated the sides at half time, with the scores sitting at 4-06 to 0-06. Aughnamullen battled hard in the second half, coming close to finding the net on a number of occasions but unfortunately Scotstown held firm and punished on the counter attack. Further goals for Scotstown pushed the game out of Aughnamullen’s reach and despite their best efforts, they couldn’t mount a comeback against a very strong Scotstown team. Commiserations to the team, which was; Conor McKeown, Gerard Connolly, Sean Deery, Ryan Phillips, Phil McCaul, Ryan Markey, Ciaran Deery, David Geoghegan, James Burke, Ben McGeough, Jack Ward, Jason Cassidy, Ned Bevis, Sean Kerley, Luke Mulligan, Ryan Boyle, Dylan Hamilton, Peter Woods, Hugh Daire Hamill, Tommy Mooney, JP Connolly, Rhys Geoghegan, Finn McEntee and John Woods. Our Undee 15 Division 1 side start their Championship campaign tomorrow evening, Thursday at home to Monaghan Harps at 7.15pm. Our Division 5B side play away to Donaghmoyne this evening, Wednesday at 7.15pm in the Championship, result in next week’s notes. Best of luck to all teams and management.

Under 13s: Our Under 13 A team play at home to Killeevan in round 2 of the Championship this Saturday the 20th of August at 11am. Our Division 6 team play away to Truagh this Saturday at 2.30pm. Best of luck to both teams. All support welcome.

Correction: In last week’s notes in the report of the Under 15 Division 2 final, a mistake was made when crediting the scorer of Aughnamullen’s goal. It was Conor Connolly found the net in the game, who added to an already impressive tally on the night to help his team over the line.
