Pride of Place: Pride of place this week must surely go to our Under 13 team who won the Division 2 Cup on Saturday afternoon last against Tyholland on a scoreline of 4-10 to 0-05. Aughnamullen started the game well but didn’t get their first score until 13 minutes in ,when Ben Mcgeogh got a point. After that Ben, Jack ward and Phil McCaul exchanged scores until Alex Bannigan who took a heavy knock earlier on got the games first goal in the 18th Minute. After that Aughnamullen Scored 1-3 without reply with the goal coming from Phil McCaul.
Cillian Lambe finished off the first half in style with very well worked goal to send Aughnamullen 3-9 to 0-2 points ahead at half time.
Tyholland came out determined in the second half but Aughnamullen’s defence led by Daniel Nolan , with Dane Mulligan cleaning up was too strong for Tyholland only allowing them to score 3 points in the second half. Aughnamullen missed several goal chances but finished the
game superbly with a second goal from Alex Bannigan and a Point from Ben McGeough to make them 4-10 to 5 point winners on the day.
A first class display from the boys who have been training since February and their management team of Francie Ward,
Marty Burke, Martin Boyle, PJ Markey, Jim Murphy and Philly Farrely. The starting team was as follows;
Ben McGeogh (joint captain)
Jack Ward (joint captain)
Alex Bannigan 2-0
Ben McGeogh 0-5
Jack Ward 0-4
Phil McCaul 1-1
Cillian Lambe 1-0
A big thank you to Brian McArdle for organizing the DVD and to Martin McMahon for commentating on the game.
The boys now await the Championship, best wishes to the team and management.
Seniors: Our seniors played at home to Castleblayney on Friday night last in the final game of the League, winning on a scoreline of 1-14 to 2-10. Points from Colin Clerkin and Jason Duffy gave Aughnamullen the early advantage and further points from Clerkin and Darren Geoghegan extended our lead which looked to put us ahead at the break. A late rally from the visitors at the end of the first half closed a five point gap to leave the teams level at half time. Blayney started the second half the brighter with two early points to take the lead for the first time in the game. Aughnamullen responded in strong fashion, leaving the game in the melting pot coming into the final minutes with our scores from Kevin Sheridan and Darren Geoghegan. A crucial goal in the final minute of the game from Kieran Duffy, followed by another quality score from Kevin Sheridan sealed the win. A goal from the visitors with the final kick of the game reduced the gap to the minimum, which didn’t alter the final result which delivered a solid win for Aughnamullen to leave us on 7 points at the end of the league campaign. This leaves us with a League Relegation Playoff Semi Final away to Carrickmacross this Sunday the 17th of July at 1pm. Best of luck to the team and management.
