Ulster Championship Quarter Final: The playing season finally came to an end on Sunday in Celtic Park when Donaghmoyne bowed out of the Ulster Championship following a quarter final defeat to Derry champions Steelstown. Donaghmoyne playing their fourth big game in as many weeks seemed to run out of steam in the second half of what was a real game of two halves.
The first half opened with a trademark Davy Garland point in the opening minute but Steelstown responded immediately with a goal following a break down the right wing. Steelstown then added a point on 6 minutes before Donaghmoyne replied with a well taken goal from Ronan McDonald who cut in on the left and finished from an acute angle. Steelstown pointed in the 10th minute to move one in front but the final score of the first quarter came from the boot of Liam McDonald who converted a penalty which was won by Davy Garland who was taken down in the box following a smartly taken free from Padraig Donaghy. Liam McDonald pointed again after the water break and Davy Garland moved the Fontenoys 4 ahead from an advanced mark. The final score of the half came from the home team leaving the score 1-3 to 2-3 at the break.
The second half started in the worst possible fashion with Steelstown scoring a goal and point in the first minute, Davy Garland equalized with another mark, that was to be the last time the sides were level as the Derry Champions hit an unanswered 1-5 in a devastating 10 minute spell to pull 8 points clear, Davy Garland converted two frees just before the water break to reduce the deficit to 6. Any hopes of a Donaghmoyne fight back were ended shortly after the water break when Steelstown added another 1-1, the goal coming from a penalty. The final period was a low key affair with the Derry side introducing fresh legs and limiting Donaghmoyne to just one more point from a Garland free. Final score 4-13 to 2-7. This was a disappointing end to what has been a remarkable season and shouldn’t overshadow the achievements of a League and Championship double as well as an U19 title. The players and management can now take a well-earned rest to recover from what has been a gruelling campaign before returning to training in the new year.
