Senior Team: Junior Football League Champions. Great excitement was had in Monaghan Harps on Sunday last, 21st November as the lads were crowned league champions after a perfect display of football in a very good and cleanly contested match that was played in great spirits by both teams. Toome bounced back after the recent disappointment of the championship, the lads regrouped and got down to business and answered many of the critics along the way. Toome senior team won 12 of their 13 matches this year and were the stand out Junior team this year playing a brand of football that deserved a promotion. The Toome faithful have backed this team all the way and showed up in great numbers at every match, they were duly rewarded with the display in the final as Toome took the Dr Ward Cup back to St Victor’s Park and will now join the Intermediate ranks next year.
This was a well contested game and played at a great tempo in great spirits, with a few turnovers and some great defending by both teams it was not until we passed the 7th minute mark before we had a score on the board, after some tough work to get past his markers it was James who opened the scoring with a great point to get us started, Clones levelled it with a free and then against all odds and somewhat fortunate circumstances the ever reliable John Gorman conceded a goal, this put the Clones side ahead by 3. John would go on to make amends with no less that 3 outstanding saves in this match. Frank was to pull a score back with a well taken free, then it was the turn of Paddy who pulled of a fantastic score from an acute angle, Clones scored two more points with a free and one from play and James pulled another back from a free and we headed to the Water Break at 0:04 – 1:03, although we were two points down we looked comfortable and with James Wilson on fire and William Woods delivering great balls in, this would go our way. William pulled of a great score from play after the water break and Paddy brought us level after an exceptional pass through by Frank. This game was heating up now and at the other end John pulled off a great save to deny Clones, James was up again with another good score and this was followed up by Sean who had made a great run, Clones were up again to put just the one between them. James was on call again scoring an outrageous point and then scored a free to put 3 between the sides. John was up next with another great save, with Clones converting the 45, HT Score Toome 0:10 – 1:05 clones. The next 15 minutes seen some of the finest football played all year by the lads and was a joy to watch. Clones opened the scoring in the second half with an intelligent mark, then it was all Toome, William then Frank from play, then it was an absolute moment of perfection from William with a fantastic score, Frank again this time with a well taken free, William then got the ball after a great pass in and you could see by the gleam in his eye that it was only going to go in one place, twisting and turning his player her scored an exceptional goal and Toome were now in the lead by 8. Ryan was on the scoresheet next with a well taken fisted point, Clones pulled a score back from play only for James to respond with another outrageous point and Toomes last score in this match, Clones scored another bringing us to the Water Break 1:16 – 1:08. Clones tried to up the ante in the final period, in the 51st minute Clones were given a Black Card. Clones never looked to be a man down in this remaining 10 minutes though and Toome were under a little pressure, but in all honesty looked to be in control at the same time. Clones pulled a score back from a free, then we had the first Toome substitute of the game, Ryan was taken off after a solid shift for Tincer, Clones got another free and now there was 6 in it. Another point from play and Toome were taking some heat, Cormac received a yellow, and although it was hard to pick a man of the match as ALL the lads put in a solid performance, Cormac had to be a contender, he was taken off for the Bainisteoir Gary to take to the field and bring a sense of calm and experience. Clones scored another at the end of the game and this was it, the whistle blew and Toome were now the Junior Football League Champions. This was a great performance from every player and a well and truly deserved result. These are a fantastic bunch of lads who richly deserved these spoils, each and every single one of these men are a credit to themselves, their families and loved ones and to the Club and all our members. Congratulation’s lads enjoy the experience and we look forward to following you next year in the ranks of Intermediate Football. TuaimAbú. Full Time Score: Toome 1:16 – 1:12 Clones, Scorers: William 1:03, James 0:06 (2F), Frank 0:03 (2F), Paddy 0:02, Sean & Ryan 0:01.
