U13’s complete the double

Pride of place this week goes to our U13’s who wrapped up their competitive year by completing the double by adding the Division 3 championship to their Division 4 league success from a number of weeks ago. Having accounted for Oram and Killeevan on their way to the final, it was Corduff they faced in the decider in Doohamlet last Saturday morning and what a cracker of a game the 2 sides produced for the large and vocal group of supporters. Playing against a strong breeze it was Rockcorry who got off to a good start as early points seen them go 2 up before Corduff replied at the other end. An exchange of points between the sides in a very open game of football seen Rock hold a 4 points to 2 lead before a flurry of scores from Corduff seen them register 1-02 without reply and take the lead for the first time. With Rockcorry using their re-starts to great effect they did get up the field for points with Corduff replying at the other end to leave the minimum between them at the first water break with Corduff leading 1-05 to 7 points. Indeed they pushed that out to a 3 point lead before the move of the game seen Calum Calvert and Mochara Lynch combine with Mochara finishing to the back of the net to leave matters 1-07 apiece as the game headed towards half time. There was an opportunity for Corduff to take the lead once more which the duly did as they took the break 1-08 to 1-07 ahead.

The opening minutes of the 2nd half again seen Rockcorry level matters up before they once more took the lead when they capitalised on some hesitancy in the Corduff defence with Josh Brady looking like he got the last touch on a loose ball to finish low to the net. With a further point been added it pushed out Rocks lead to 4 points, but back came Corduff with a goal of their own to put the minimum between them. With the game moving at a cracking pace, it was Rock who again troubled the scoreboard as they used the breeze to great effect to register scores from distance, to once more go 4 ahead and when Euan Mc Fadden cut out a Corduff re-start and fired to the net to claim a 3rd Rock goal, the gap was out to 7 by the 2nd water break. In fairness to Corduff they threw everything at the Rockcorry rear guard, who were in no mood to cough up scores and with quick counter attack play they picked off points as the game moved towards the final moments and they claimed the title with a 3-16 to 2-08 victory. Both teams are to be commended for providing a highly entertaining, sporting and skilful game of football and it is a massive well done

to the U13 panel and management for completing the double and indeed adding to their U13 championship title from 2020. Adding to the success of the U15’s in the league and the U11’s in the Bosco Carroll cup, the future really is green. A DVD of the championship final is available for €10 by contacting our youth officer Sharon Fox.
