With the disappointment of our Championship campaign behind us, the reward for our fine earlier season league form was a home semi-final against Doohamlet. It was a game that ebbed and flowed throughout and never failed to entertain the large crowd that had braved the chilly conditions to cheer on their team. Doohamlet set their stall out early and it was evident that they were going to make it a physical encounter…. indeed, they won some early turnovers and took an early 3-1 lead but when our lads began to match them for power and pace through the middle we were able to pick off some nice scores – a dominant second quarter saw us go in at halftime 0-07 to 0-04 up. We held the lead until the 43rd minute and had a couple of decent goal chances which could have put daylight between us however disaster struck in the 43rd & 45th minutes when Doohamlet capitalised on some idling in defence to turn the game on its head with two opportunist goals. From there we managed to claw 2 points back until we eventually got the goal we needed in the 56th minute when a scramble in the Doohamlet goal mouth resulted in the ball being bundled over the line to leave the game tied. Doohamlet reacted best though and restored their lead with full time looming but when some good attacking play resulted in a 20-meter free for us to equalise, Eddie Walsh made no mistake and sent us to extra time.
It’s fair to say we bossed the first period in extra time out scoring the visitors 5-2 and held firm deep into the 2nd period and managed to extend the lead to 4 points with regulation time almost up, however a hopeful high ball in from Doohamlet resulted in the referee calling a penalty against us much to the bemusement of all in the vicinity. Doohamlet duly converted to leave just 1 in it and having entered the third minute of injury time at the end of extra time everyone expected the referees whistle to blow but amazingly he played on. We tried a bit of keep ball waiting for the overdue whistle, but the possession broke down and we allowed Doohamlet one more shot on target and fair play to the kicker he sent it over the bar to level things once more. The full time whistle duly sounded and we were headed for penalties…. What drama, and when we missed our first spot kick it looked ominous for us but credit to our remaining kickers who all converted and it was keeper Kian Duffy who made two great saves, both from County star Colin Walshe…the last save coming in sudden death and we edged it 5-4.
So it’s on to Corduff next Sunday for the Final where we will play Donaghmoyne at 2pm. Best of luck lads!
