Donaghmoyne Development Meeting: The weekend got off to a great start with the unveiling of the Pairc Fontenoy redevelopment plans on Friday evening in Lisdoonan Centre. The large crowd in attendance were given a detailed presentation of the exciting development plans which include a new Astro Turf Pitch, car parking, dressing rooms and revamping of the main playing field. With the plans soon to be finalized the future really does look bright for Donaghmoyne GFC.

Mc Elvaney Waste & Recycling Intermediate Championship Final: Donaghmoyne claimed the 2021 Intermediate Championship title on Sunday with another performance full of determination and quality. In what was a fiercely contested local derby with a strong Aughnamullen outfit the Fontenoys just had the extra firepower needed, hitting 2-11 to win by 3 points.

The opening exchanges were cagey with conditions underfoot proving to be tricky following a foggy morning. The first score came in the 8th minute from the boot of Davy Garland who pointed again in the 10th minute. Aughnamullen opened their account in the 12th minute with a point which was followed almost immediately by an Aughnamullen goal and point to move the sarsfields into a 3 point lead at the water break. Donaghmoyne replied witch scores from Garland and Stephen Finnegan to narrow the gap to one. The game was becoming more open with the teams going point for point. Aughnamullen extended the lead to 2 but were pegged back by scores from Garland and Liam McDonald who scored the next two Donaghmoyne scores to leave the side’s level 0-7 to 1-4 at the interval.

Donaghmoyne opened the second half with points from McDonald and Garland to lead by 2 only to be rocked by a point and a goal from Aughnamullen who moved 2 clear 10 minutes into the second half. Donaghmoyne replied immediately with a well worked attack which was finished clinically by Liam McDonald, another fluent move down the left flank saw Liam McDonald bear down on goal only to be taken down before he could take his shot. The resulting penalty was dispatched excellently by Liam McDonald taking his tally to 2-3 moving Donaghmoyne into a 4 point lead at the water break. Aughnamullen replied with a point and were handed a lifeline when a scramble in the Donaghmoyne box resulted in a penalty. With the game delicately poised Aughnamullens talisman Micheal Bannigan stepped up to take the spot kick striking the ball fiercely to Keeper Shane Garlands right, Garland however was equal to the task saving brilliantly to deny Aughnamullen the chance to equalize. An Aughnamullen point closed the gap to 2 with 5 minutes to play, Davy Garland replied immediately only for Bannigan to respond closing the gap once again to 2. That was to be Aughnamullens last score as Davy Garland finished the scoring in the 29th minute taking his account

to 0-7. Aughnamullen pressed for a goal in the final minutes but there was to be no denying this Fontenoy side who had shown all season that they had the character needed to see out big games.

There were jubilant scenes as the final whistle sounded and the Donaghmoyne support streamed onto the pitch to congratulate their team and managers on a well-deserved win. The man of the match award was presented to Liam McDonald who scored an impressive 2-3 matching the achievements of older brother Ronan who claimed the same award in the 2016 final. Captain Mickey Murnaghan was presented with the Paddy O’Rourke cup sparking wild celebrations from all the Donaghmoyne fans and team.

Congratulations to the “three wise men” David, Derek and Noel and to all the players on this fantastic achievement. Commiserations to Aughnamullen who more than played their part in a truly entertaining encounter.
