We played Corduff at home in our first match in the relegation group last Saturday evening and to say it wasn’t the result or indeed the performance we needed would be a huge under-statement. We played second fiddle to a more determined Corduff team for most if not all of the hour. Having opened the scoring from a free, Corduff were then awarded a dubious penalty which they duly converted. It was a half of frees as the only score from play from either side came from Killian Collins in the 21st minute and we went in at half-time trailing 1-04 to 0-03. We struggled to break down a stubborn Corduff defence although its fair to say we made it easy for them to get men behind the ball due to our slow and laboured offence. When we did manage to turn over the ball there was no urgency in our counterattack probably because we’d committed too many bodies back behind the ball at times and had little options up front where it mattered in the scoring zone. Corduff on the other hand were able to snuff out attack after attack then break at speed the other end. This was certainly the contrast between the 2 teams and case in point was the killer goal that the visitors scored 8 minutes into the 2nd half which effectively ended the match as a contest. Although the black card harshly presented to Tiernan Duffy moments before the goal did leave a gaping hole in our defence which Corduff exploited. Final score Corduff 2-10 Killanny 0-07…..Perhaps the disappointment of missing out narrowly on a quarter final spot a fortnight earlier was still raw in the minds of our lads but 7 points scored in an hours football quite frankly isn’t good enough and if we want to be playing Intermediate football next season then massive improvement is required for the Eire Og match next weekend. What has happened to the league form we showed earlier in year? Who knows…. but lets hope we can find it again and find it before 3pm next Saturday…!
