Blackhill Emeralds Club Notes:

Intermediate Football Championship sponsored by McElvaney’s Waste & Recycling:

Quarter-Final Blackhill 1-09 Donaghmoyne 1-13 Sunday October 24th in St.Mary’s Park, Castleblayney.

Blackhill: Shane Farrell, Ryan Courtney (C), Donál Courtney, Tomás Courtney, Gerard McArdle, James Daly, Killian Carragher, Ryan Craig, Anthony Courtney, Ciarán Courtney, Tommy Geehan, Jason Finnegan, Michael Geehan, Phillip Donnelly & Hugh Byrne. Subs Used: Dermot Daly for K Carragher & Niall Donnelly  for J Finnegan.

We started slowly on Sunday evening shipping 1-3 in the first quarter with the impressive Stephen Finnegan to the fore. An opening point from Tommy Geehan from play and a Phillip Donnelly free bookended the quarter 1-3 0-2 at the first sos uisce. Blackhill grew into the contest in the second quarter, Shane Farrell in goal especially good and a lovely Phillip Donnelly point from play and a Dermot Daly free left the score at half time 1-4 0-4. Indeed we may well have been level but for a superb save to deny Ciarán Courtney from Garret McDonald late on. Blackhill took a grip on the contest in the third quarter with a 1-3 blitz of our own in the opening three minutes. An excellent Hugh Byrne point was followed by the score of the game when Ciarán Courtney crashed the ball to the net after a fluent move, Tommy Geehan added his second point from play and we went 1-6 to 1-4 up. Blackhill added further scores with an inspirational James Daly point followed by Hugh Byrnes second point from play, with both men leading from the front all through. Blackhill were moving the ball really well with Donaghmoyne countering by breaking at pace with S Finnegan and David Garland impressing though the Blackhill defensive unit playing man on man did a great job containing the overall threat to our goal. The second sos uisce saw the sides tied at 1-8 apiece. In the final quarter a Phillip Donnelly point was our only reward and agonisingly we created some great goal chances playing superb football that just went the wrong side of the post, and that’s just the way football goes sometimes. Good luck to Donaghmoyne and many thanks to the Faughs for hosting the game. We as a club are proud of the commitment and football played by all our senior players this season and of the efforts of our captain Ryan Courtney, manager Aidan McCabe and his selectors Aiden Little and Anthony McCann. The football season is now closed.
