Bosco Carroll Memorial Cup
It would be difficult to give any report that would do justice to the Rockcorry and Blackhill U11 panels who provided an absorbing encounter in the Bosco Carroll memorial cup final on Saturday past. These sides met a number of weeks ago in the Liam Stirrat Development league and provided a highly entertaining encounter, so more of the same was expected and neither side disappointed. It was Blackhill who got off to a blistering start as they fired over 6 unanswered points before the first water break as they used their pace and movement to cause the home side rear guard a lot of trouble. Indeed the water break came at the right time for Rockcorry as they took the opportunity to re-adjust and the finished out the half by getting their opening 2 scores to leave it 6points to 2 in favour of Blackhill at the break. No doubt tough words may have been exchanged at the break as the home side came storming out of the blocks for the 2nd half and with the Blackhill defence standing firm it was a number of converted 45’s that seen Rockcorry work their way back into the game with a number of points also coming from play to leave it 7 points to 6 at the 2nd water break in their favour. The final quarter was a maze of last ditch defending and brilliant turn overs as both sides went at it. Having put some much effort into the start of the game, Blackhill perhaps tired a little as the Rockcorry forwards found a bit more extra space to pick off scores and popped on a further 3-06 to Blackhills 2 points to run out 3-13 to 0-08 point winners, a scoreline that certainly does not do justice to the competitiveness of the encounter. Afterwards members of the Carroll family were on hand to present the Bosco Carroll memorial Cup to the victorious joint captains of Rockcorry while an acknowledgement was also paid to Blackhill for their contribution to a great game of football. It was very evident after the game that a healthy and sporting bond has been built between these two teams and clubs and we look forward to further meetings between them.
A word of thanks to the Carroll family for the presentation of the Cup/medals and refreshments and to Kyle Brannigan and his officials for taking charge of the game.
