Intermediate League
We got off to the ideal start in group 1 of the Intermediate League with a comprehensive victory over Corduff in Pairc Eanna last Sunday afternoon. Played in ideal conditions in front of a large crowd we really hit the ground running with Cillian Leegan & Gavin Flanagan getting early scores before a great run from young wing back Kyle Connolly ended with him crashing the ball to the Corduff net after just 5 minutes. Killian Collins & Cillian Leegan added further scores to leave us 1-04 to 0-01 up after just 10 minutes. Corduff hit the next 2 points, both from placed balls but Killian Collins hit a beauty off the left peg to give us a 5 point lead at the first water break. On the resumption Eddie Walsh fielded high inside the forty, raised his hand for the mark and duly struck over the point. There was a scrappy period for about 10 minutes then where no score was registered and during which Corduff’s corner forward received a black card for a kick out at Killian Collins. Eddie Walsh duly slotted over the resulting free. The killer blow for Corduff then came on the stroke of half-time, a long speculative ball into the small area was met by the inrushing Conor Vernon who managed to flick it past the hapless Corduff keeper into the net and leave the half-time score 2-07 to 0-03.
The instructions at halftime were ‘no let-up’ and clearly the lads took them on board with good spells of possession and quick intricate handpassing resulting in the Corduff rear-guard giving away frees in the early stages of the 2nd half which Eddie Walsh made no mistake from converting in the 32nd & 34th minutes. Corduff to their credit did respond and hit the next 2 scores before Danny Leegan who was having an unusually quiet match rose to nearly double his height to pluck one from the clouds, turn on a six-pence and sent the ball cruising over the bar. We won possession from the resulting kick-out with Michael Vernon drawing a foul and Eddie Walsh converting the free to leave it 2-11 to 0-05 at the whistle for the 2nd water break. On the restart, Corduff reduced the gap by one but then Eddie Walsh picked the ball up on the forty and despite being ushered out towards the side-line, still managed to hit a beauty from a tight angle. Corduff hit the next 2 points but these were swiftly cancelled out by 2 Killanny frees, one from Eddie Walsh and a nice inswinger from wide on the right from Gavin Flanagan. With the game gone from them Corduff were trying to minimise the damage and another free was conceded which Eddie Walsh duly struck over to leave it 2-15 to 0-08. Sub Kevin Crawley was introduced for the last few minutes and his first touch was to get on the end of a high ball in and fist it against the bar only to manage to get on the end of the rebound and palm it into the net. Corduff did get a consolation goal which had some confusion around it as many
though it was a foul on the keeper but nonetheless it went into the referees note book to leave the final score Killanny 3-15 Corduff 1-08.
