Seniors: The seniors advanced to the semifinals of the Intermediate Championship in dramatic fashion on Sunday evening when they overturned an eleven point deficit in 20 action packed minutes of the second half to stun Emyvale and the large crowd in attendance. Donaghmoyne started the match brightly with points from Stephen Finnegan and the lively Cormac O’Connor. As the half progressed the Fontenoys created a number of great goal scoring chances only to find the Emyvale keeper in fine form, a scrappy Emyvale goal then put the north Monaghan team into the lead on 24 minutes. Donaghmoyne responded with a point from Davy Garland followed by a well taken Donaghy goal to draw the side’s level. Emyvale responded immediately with another goal and went into the break with a four point lead 2-6 to 1-5. The opening stages of the second half saw Emyvale extend their lead to 11 points courtesy of a penalty and four unanswered points and with Donaghmoyne reduced to fourteen men an appearance in the back door seemed inevitable. Donaghmoyne however had other ideas, and not for the first time this season they set about producing a remarkable comeback. Darren McElroy registered a point followed by two fine Stephen Finnegan points who was causing Emyvale trouble with surging runs from deep. Further scores from Davy Garland narrowed the gap and the crowd sensed that the momentum was shifting. Frank Markey and Niall Keenan were controlling the midfield exchanges while the fresh legs of Barney Kelly and James McCaughey were forcing turnovers as Emyvale were pinned back in their own half. The direct running of Garland and Finnegan was creating havoc in the Emyvale rearguard and a well taken O’Connor goal brought Donaghmoyne right back into contention. A foul on McElroy yielded a penalty which was struck well by O’Connor but was well saved by the excellent Forde in the Emyvale goal. Despite this setback Donaghmoyne continued to control the exchanges with scores from Garland and Finnegan and on 27 minutes the sides were level 3-10 to 2-13. Further scores from Garland, O’Connor and Ronan McDonald put the Fontenoys into an unlikely 3 point lead. Emyvale pulled one back only for O’Connor to point again. With The game deep into injury time Emyvale pressed for an equalizing goal and there were anxious moments as the ball pin balled about the Donaghmoyne square, the situation called for a cool head and there was none cooler than Frank Markey who fisted Emyvales final score over the Donaghmoyne bar to close out the game. Well Done lads on a thrilling second half performance. Next game Sunday at 12:30 v Emyvale in Donaghmoyne.
