St.Mellans Handball Club

Adult Club Doubles. There was a hectic evening of handball on Wednesday past (April 3rd) as there were 3 finals down for decision, the first to kick off was the Scarna Inn Doubles Final which involved Emmet O Neill & Karl Mc Meel where they took on Shane Mc Clave and Niall Mc Kenna, this turned into a 3 game marathon session, in the first game Niall and Shane took it 21-14, the 2nd game Emmet & Karl were in a commanding lead but Niall and Shane closed the gap but Emmet & Karl got back in and closed it out at 21-11, the tie breaker was an even more “too-ing and frow-ing” affair as it was nip and tuck to the very end but eventually Emmet & Karl won it 21-19, definitely a very entertaining game, after that game was over then the Coalisland Fireplace Doubles Final was on between Christopher Mc Kenna(PJ) & Joe Kelly and Chrissy Mc Kenna(D) & Darrin O Reilly, again this game went to a 3 game tie-breaker, the first game Chrissy & Darrin took with a commanding score line of 21-7, the 2nd game was by far a tighter game as it went almost all the way for every point possible and CPJ & Joe took it 21-19, and so the tie-breaker was anyone’s but the momentum was with CPJ & Joe and they never let up, with some sneaky dropping balls into the front right corner by Joe proved to be the winning of a lot of points at important times and they took the 3rd game and the title 21-11, well done to both sets of winners and well done to all that played, as this wraps up our adult competitions a big thanks to all that played in the team, singles and doubles competitions and made these all very enjoyable to be a part of, well done all.

Emyvale Credit Union Juvenile Team League Final. While the adult doubles finals were on in action over to the block alley was the Emyvale & District Credit Union Juvenile Team League Final, first in were Gary Treanor & Aaron Cassidy, both games went the way of Aaron as he won them 15-11, 15-2, the 2nd game just got away on Gary but still some good play was throughout both games, next in were Fiona Flood and Cameron Mc Meel, both players shared games here with Fiona pulling back 1 point for her team as it went 15-10 for Cameron and 15-11 for Fiona, next in were Aidan Mc Kenna and Eythna Boyle, both games went in favour of Aidan as he closed the teams gap and won both 15-12, 15-7, Eythna almost had the first game but Aidan just really let Eythna settle into any sort of rhythm, this left only 5 points between the teams as the last 2 players entered, after both had already played in the 3 game tie-breaker Karl and Niall didn’t leave anything outside and both give it all, Niall levelled proceedings as he won the first game 15-10 and so at 84-84 it was all to play for, after a few in’s and outs Niall ran into a 14-1 lead in the last game and looked good for an early win but Karl didn’t give up and clawed it back to 8 before Niall got the all important score to win the league, a great performance from both considering they played for an hour and a half earlier, from the first to the last player a game worthy of being called a final, well done one and all.

U21 All Ireland Semi-Final. Good luck to club man Dermot Boyle as he teams up with Mathew Sweeney from the Harps club to represent the county in the U21 All Ireland Doubles Semi-Final on Sunday coming the 14th in Moycullen Co.Galway, there they face a Galway pairing of Diarmuid Mulkerins & Cian O Chonghaile, this will be a stern test of the Farney pair as Mulkerins is the reigning U21 All Ireland Singles champion, good luck boys from all in Mellans.

Community Games. Over the past few weeks we had a few players that took part in the Community Games, Peter Treanor, John Treanor, Donnacha Mc Cluskey & Luke Mc Kenna, some almost made finals only to be beaten by single scores but the time

run out, this was a new venture for these boys as it was a “One Wall” competition, something not many of our players would be use to, but a well worth while experience, well done boys.

Season Closing. As Wednesday evenings play brought the curtain down on all internal play in the club in both adult and juvenile we would like to thank everyone that helped set up and run off any of the competitions and coaching held through out the year, too many to name but well done to all, and without our sponsors none of the above competitions would be possible, a big thanks to Mono Furniture, SilverHill Foods, Gola Wood Works, Coalisland Fireplaces, The Scarna Inn, Emyvale & Distrcit Credit Union and Truwood, a lot of these sponsors have been here for many years and we would like to thank everyone for their continued support.
