Harps Handball

Congratulations to our 6 young finalists who competed in the County Singles Finals in Scotstown on Sunday. The medal tally was an amazing three gold and three silver.
First into action was Adam Richardson, who surprised many with his performance in the under 12 final. This was a determined display against Donnacha Mc Closkey. Adam returned many of his opponent’s difficult serves to stay in contention in game one which he lost 15-10. He could not sustain such a heroic effort in game two however. His opponent deserved victory by 15-5.
Two of our players, Matas Sakalauskas and Fergal Magee, competed in the under 13 final. This was a repeat of last year’s under 12 final which Matas won. On this occasion Fergal won in two very close games 15-14 and 15-13.  The standard of play was perhaps not of the highest quality although there were many long rallies with the scores level on many occasions. Fergal’s serves proved the difference.
The Under 14 final featuring Seán Callan had to be postponed due to a broken finger sustained by the Harps player last week.
Aidan Cunningham won the under 15 final on the scores of15-7, 15-5.  He started off rather nervously and made uncharacteristic hand errors. However he was always in control as the game progressed. His hours of training certainly paid off handsomely.
Again it was an All-Harps under 16 final between Tiarnán O’Rourke and Szymon Polewski. The latter put in a huge effort in preparation for this high-quality final which produced the best performance of the day represented by extremely long rallies and fantastic ceiling shots. The scores 15-1, 15-4 do not do justice to a very competitive encounter. Tiarnán’s never-give-up attitude amazed the large number of supporters. His ability to retrieve so-called lost causes was outstanding.
So it was gold for Fergal, Aidan and Tiarnán, and silver for Adam, Matas and Szymon.
The girls finals featuring Emily and Louise Mc Ginnity will be played at a later date. Also Seán’s final.
The referee for all the finals, Paul Cassidy, received much praise for his efforts.
The Doubles finals commencé at 10 am on Saturday December 8th at the Harps venue. All under 12 pairings will be most welcome to enter.
Training continues Sunday Mixed 10-11am, Monday U12 6.30-7.30, Wednesday 14-16`s 8-9pm, Friday 15-16`s 7-8pm please check the notice board
