Healthy Clubs Update – Operation TransFaughsmation 2019

Yared Derese smashes course record on his way to winning the Mc MahonsSupervalu Castleblayney 5K

Sunday saw the running of the night Mc Mahons Supervalu 5K Race in Castleblayney, on what a perfect day for running nearly 800 runners turning up for the start of the race.

The race which is now established as one of the best races in the North East was packed with a quality field with thirty-five clubs been represented on the day as well as a host of other sporting groups. The Under 14 race started proceedings at 1pm which saw these young athletes cover a 2 K distance, this race attracted over 275 children who spirited from the start line at the Glencarn Hotel out the Monaghan Road before turning at Castlecool to come back into town, the winner of this race was local Faughs lad Max Mc Ginnity followed closely by his good friend Charlie McQuillan with yet another Faughs player Alfie Hughes coming home in third, in the girls race Emily Dawes from Clones AC come home in front of Lyndsey Kelly from Armagh AC who just pipped Maeve Smith from Carrick Aces .

Operation TransFAUGHSmation 2019 Winner

Winner – Carrick Aces Yared Derese

When it got down to the serious stuff of the Adult Race, we had all the ingredients for a fast time, perfect running conditions coupled with a very strong field and so it proved to be right from the off Carrick Aces Yared Derese winner of this year Dublin City Half Marathon hit the front followed by Declan Toal from North Eat Runners with Shane Brady from Clones A.C. and Shane Lynch from Glenmore A.C in hot pursuit.

At the turning point Derese decided to push for home leaving the field and sprinted for home setting a new course record time of 14:34 to claim first place, Declan Toal finished second in a time of 15:58 with Shane Brady finishing third in a time of 17:02.

First female home was Laura Mathews from North East Runners in a time of 18:13; last year’s winner Denise Tonner finished in second in a time of 18:30 while local Blayney Rockets lady Nicola Flanagan finished 18:36. After the race all participants and supporters attended a packed Glencarn Hotel were the staff supplied free Tea, Coffee and sandwiches to all.

The audience was entertained as Stephen Dignam presented all the winners with their prizes, with Tom Miller presenting the Operation TransFAUGHSmation crew with their prizes .
