On Friday evening last we travelled to Emyvale to face Latton in round 1b of the championship. With a 5 day turn around and injuries to key players, Dick missing his first championship game in 22 years with a hip injury, Ronan King broken bone in foot, Cian North broken finger and Eoin Morrow quad injury, this was a
big ask. But a defeat by a solid goal showed great character and effort by the lads with some good performances.
We went a point up with a converted free by Jack. Then both teams were guilty of wides before Latton equalised from a free and went a point up from play. Kevin converted a free to leave all square. Then a fortuitous goal hitting the post and in across the line saw Latton go ahead. Both Jack and Stephen scored points from play then to leave score at 0-4 to 1-2. Latton then scored 3 points from play leaving us trailing by 4. Jack then scored a great goal to leave one in it. A point from play by Ciaran McCaffrey saw out the half with all square 1-5 to 1-5
The second half resumed with Latton adding a point from play and added a further from a free. Jack converted a free then to leave just a point in it. We were forced to make an early substitution with Cian North himself injured coming on to replace Conor Smyth who picked up an injury that forced him out of the game. Jack scored the next 2 points from play after some good play by the lads. Ciaran McCaffery scored another great score from play leaving us 2 points up. A mistake gave Latton a score from play and they then added another point leaving all square again. Stephen put us a point up before Latton scored their second goal. This goal came after David Hynes was denied a penalty in the Latton goal mouth and unfortunately Latton went down field and scored. Enda McCaffrey scored a point from play which was our last score and Latton put another two points on the board to leave final score at Currin 1-11 to Latton 2-11. So, lady luck was not with us, but it was a great effort, and this ends our run in the championship. However, the lads can hold their heads up high as both games could have been won on the day. A big thank you to all the supporters who travelled to both games and cheered on the team.
