Intermediate League

We travelled to Aughnamullen last Friday night to take on the Sarsfields short a couple of regulars. The homesters belittled their current lowly league position to settle in to the game the quicker despite the fact that Conor Vernon had opened the scoring with a fine point in the 2nd minute. By the 9th minute however, they were four points to one up then Eddie Walsh tapped over a free that he’d earned himself. Aughnamullen were playing the better football it must be said and found scores easier to come by than we did. They went three points up in the 12th minute before Cillian Leegan burst forward on a meandering run only to be fouled on the 21-yard line and Eddie Walsh tapped over the resultant free. Aughnamullen were bossing midfield and won the next kick-out and another point ensued. Kian Duffy decided to change tact and hit a short kick-out but the Aughnamullen forwards were alert to it and intercepted the kick out on our 21’ and in a split second the ball was finished to the back of our net, a gift. Although we got the next score from the boot of Eddie Walsh, things went from bad to worse for us as we conceded another goal within two minutes, all of a sudden, we were eight points down. Seven more minutes had elapsed before the next score which came from the boot of Gavin Flanagan, quickly followed by a good score from the returning Eddie Markey, who was having his first start since arriving back from bean-harvesting in Spain. We had Flanagan on the square and he had the beating of his marker now winning the high ball in and duly plucked another one out of the clouds before turning and firing over the bar when a goal was there for the taking, when asked afterwards why he didn’t bury it, he said that he’d got a ‘little’ push…….anyway, the big turning point from an Aughnamullen point of view came just before the break when an off-the-ball incident in the middle of the park resulted in their midfielder seeing red. They did manage the last score of the half though to go in six points up. We had work to do, but huge credit to the lads they came out a different team in the second half and upped the intensity. It was Gavin Flanagan who started the come back when he raced out to pick up the ball out wide and fired over a good score from distance. Eddie Markey who had given his all then made way for Jack Kiernan. Eddie Walsh then converted a close range free before Sean Finn got forward to finish off a good move and slot over. The gap was now down to three and the fourteen men of Aughnamullen were under pressure. We kept the freshness in the attack with Conor Mathers introduced for Mark Grimes. Tiernan Duffy who had been having a bruising tussle in the middle all game then broke free down the centre and fired over an inspirational score, then, two minutes later Gavin Flanagan fielded high again on the edge of the square and hit his fourth of the match. It was now a one-point game with ten minutes remaining, Aughnamullen still hadn’t scored in the second half and needed something but there was to be no let up from our boys who forced another turn over in the opposition half which resulted in another free in and Eddie Walsh made no mistake to bring things level. Aughnamullen did manage a couple of attacks but their finishing was disappointing and in

stark contrast to that of Eddie Walsh who then fired over a great score from out wide on the right to give us the lead for the first time since the 2nd minute of the match. If this had been a boxing match the ref would have stopped it as Aughnamullen were on the ropes and badly wounded, but they found enough to claw back an equalizer with just five minutes to go (their first score of the 2nd half). Conor Vernon who had put in his usual trojan performance was then black carded and Gavin Traynor replaced him. The anxiety levels were through the roof of the stand with both sets of supporters wondering who could find that little bit extra and grab a late late winner when in the 3rd minute of injury time the referee blew for a free in for us fifty-five meters out from the home goal, much to the disgust of the Aughamullen defenders who voiced their opinion a little too vigorously. The ref duly brought the ball forward ten meters for dissent, but the complaining didn’t stop and the ball got moved in again as far as the 21-yard line which meant a tap over free for Eddie Walsh and a one-point lead for us. The game was surely up but the referee allowed play to continue, Aughnamullen won the resultant kick-out in the middle, their no.10 picked the ball up and headed for goal but seemed to just fall over forty yards from goal (perhaps he was pushed by the same guy who’d nudged Flanagan earlier). Free in awarded and duly struck over the bar to leave things level in Lough Egish. A highly entertaining match which both teams could have won but just as easily could have lost…………. final score Aughnamullen 2-09 Killanny 0-15

U-13 Champions

Well done to U-13 team & management on winning the Division 3 Cup Final against Corduff last Saturday in Carrickmacross.

Played in balmy conditions last Saturday morning Corduff headed in to the game as strong favourites after having done the double over us in the league already this season. The first half panned out pretty much to form as Corduff showed their dominance hitting a couple of goals to take a 2-03 to 0-04 lead at half-time, our four points coming from Cian Burns (2), Daniel Kelly & Tristan McElwain. The second half became somewhat of a goal fest as the game opened up and we knew we had to go for it. Cian Burns pulled one back for us early before Corduff replied. The comeback began when Oran Connolly, who was introduced as a second half substitute, hit the back of the Corduff net to leave just two in it. The excellent Cian Burns then pointed to leave the minimum between the sides before Daniel Kelly broke through the Corduff rear guard to finish coolly to the net and give us the lead. Corduff didn’t panic however and responded immediately with a goal of their own to regain the lead but not to be outdone that man Daniel Kelly again left the Corduff defence for dead as he picked his spot and fired low to the Corduff net. From the resultant kick-out Daniel Breen fielded well and struck over a lovely point then Daniel Kelly converted a free to extend our lead to four

points with 12 minutes to go. Corduff did manage to pull one back then but this would prove to be their last successful attack as our dominance and superior fitness started to show as we entered the home straight. Further points from Oran Connolly, Sean O’Reilly, Daniel Kelly Daniel Breen put daylight between us and just for good measure in the final act of the match Daniel Kelly rose highest at the back post to punch home a Cian Burns high ball in to the back of the Corduff net and the cup was headed home. Final score Killanny 4-13 Corduff 3-05……..Well done lads!!
