Harps Handball Notes

Congratulations to Eoghan Mc Ginnity and sub Konrad Kowal on a very tense victory over Mayo’s Alan Masterson and Lorcon Conlon in the Minor Doubles semifinal held in Monaghan on Sunday. The scores, 21-19, 21-11 fully illustrated how close this encounter was. Indeed Mayo led 19-16 in Game 1 and we’re unlucky not to win this game. The Harps pairing face a tough task in the final against Kilkenny’s Jack Holden and Jack Doyle. Thanks to Helena and Suzanne for providing the refreshments for all visitors.

Hard luck to our U 21 semifinalist Matthew Sweeney and his partner Dermot Boyle who lost both games against Galway. The scores were 21-0, 21-1.

We had a clean sweep of victories in the Community Games County Handball Finals which were held in Beech Hill College last Thursday.  Calum Sherry defeated Corduff’s Shane Courtney by just a few points in a very close match. This was a high quality final between two superb players.

The second final was an All-Harps affair between Szymon Polewski and Aidan Cunningham. This was a high-quality final between two good friends. Early on the scores were close but Szymon eventually pulled away and held on for victory. Our third winner was Ernesta Marut, who had a walkover in her final. She was well prepared for this final and now progresses along with Calum and Szymon to the national finals in Limerick in May.

The Irish Junior Nationals will be held in Tyrone and Monaghan venues in May. An incredible entry from the Harps with over 17 entrants ranging from Under 11 to Under 19 boys and girls. Great to see such an interest in this national competition. Other competitions to look out for include the One-wall competitions in Loughmacrory and the national One Wall in Breaffy House Castlebay. There are several other tournaments scheduled. Check the Gaahandball website for details.

Corduff GAA Handball Club Notes

Well done to Shane Courtney who was runner up in the One Wall Handball U13 Monaghan Community Games County final held at Beech Hill College on Thursday in a very tight game finishing 18-15 against Monaghan’s Callum Sherry.

St. Mellans Handball Club
U21 All Ireland Semi-Final
Dermot Boyle and team mate Mathew Sweeney from the Harps club travelled to Moycullen Co.Galway to play in the U21 All Ireland Doubles Semi-Final where they faced Diarmuid Mulkerins & Cian O Chonghaile from Galway. This was always going to be a stern test for boys as these Galway boys were a hard and tested pairing, the Monaghan men lost 21-1, 21-0, hard luck boys even though it was a tough day in the office well done, and Dermot definitely put in the
effort as he played all his games through out the year and was down giving it his all any time you would down about the alley.
