Junior Football Shield Final: Aghabog 2-12 Drumhowan 1-13
After a hard fought and very entertaining game in Cremartin last Saturday, we emerged victorious to claim the new Dartry Cup. After a shaky start we found ourselves 7 points down but the lads dug deep to get back into the games with goals by Sean O’Brien and Tyler O’Hanlon helping to turn the tide to give us a 2-05 to 1-07 lead at half-time. The second half was a real see-saw affair with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions. Drumhowan had beaten us three times already this year and the lads were determined that this would not be a fourth defeat. Two late points saw us seal victory and when the final whistle sounded it was a case of smiles all round. The Shield competition was a new departure for the Junior League this year and whilst promotion was not on the line last Sunday, this represents our first silverware at adult level since 2008. So as the saying goes – we’ll take it! Great credit must go to the management team of Declan Smyth, Marty Woods, Derek McCarville and Peadar Kelly and to all the lads who have put in a long hard year from late January to the end of October. There are plenty of good young players coming through the ranks and hopefully this success will be a catalyst to help drive the team on to even greater things in the years ahead.
